The Toronto Raptors came out of the All-Star break ready to push for the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed. They were ready to stake their claim as the East’s biggest threat to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers following trades for both Serge Ibaka and P.J. Tucker.
Then, Kyle Lowry’s surgery happened.
The Raptors are still in fine shape to earn home-court advantage in Round 1 of the postseason, but their long-term goals of taking down the Cavs seem unlikely.
All that said, they must take things one game at a time. In this case, that one game is a contest against Milwaukee Saturday night.
*All statistics, standings, records, rankings and trends are current as of this writing at 6:00 p.m. ET on Friday, March 3.
At this point in the season, the Toronto Raptors are 36-25. That record, however, dips down to about .500 when you look at their road record of 15-14.
Against the spread, Toronto is 33-27 (16-13 on the road).
Against Milwaukee, the goal (which few have been able to achieve this season) will be to contain Giannis Antetonkounmpo. The Greek Freak has had a helluva season and is looking more and more like a young LeBron James.
If the Raps can’t slow down this jack-of-all-trades point-forward, the next objective is to contain the role players. Guys like Khris Middleton, Greg Monroe and others are looking to step up with Jabari Parker out.
Keeping those guys in check will go a long way for the Raptors — especially if Giannis proves too much to handle.
The Bucks are all about Giannis at this point in their process. With Parker sidelined for the rest of the year, youngsters like Thon Maker still have a chance to prove themselves.
But if you’ve watched this team play even a single game in 2016-17, it’s clear that The Greek Freak is going to have his fingerprints all over the box score by the time this one’s said and done.
On the year, Milwaukee is 26-33. Against the spread, it’s 23-36.
At home, the Bucks are 15-16 overall with an ATS record of 13-18.
Look for them to focus all of their defensive attention on DeMar DeRozan. Not only is he a talented scorer (who looked for a while like he might lead the league in points per game), but he’s now taken full control of the offense with Lowry out.
How well DeRozan plays will have a direct impact on the outcome of this contest.
