The Brooklyn Nets are headed way out West to play the Portland Trail Blazers in a Saturday night matchup.
Neither team is currently in the top eight seeds in their respective conferences, but it’s the Blazers pushing to make the playoffs and the Nets scrapping just to look respectable.
*All statistics, standings, records, rankings and trends are current as of this writing at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, March 3.
The Brooklyn Nets can score points. They’ve proven this by being a top-10 team in terms of points scored all season.
But there’s two issues here.
For starters, their defense is atrocious. They’re one of the worst in the league, which is a direct result of not having enough talent on either end of the court to compete.
The other issue is that their points-per-game numbers are the potato chip of NBA stats: empty calories.
This team is not efficient on offense whatsoever. It uses a fast-paced offense to create easy buckets.
There’s no reason discrediting the Nets for finding a way to score. But if you’re going to claim this group is a good offensive squad, think again and take a closer look at what’s really happening on that end of the floor.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers have started to find a balance between offense and defense.
The D in the backcourt is still a massive problem, but all of a sudden the scoring tandem of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum have a complement on both ends of the court in newcomer Jusuf Nurkic.
Nurkic, a legit 7-footer, has proven in five games with the Blazers that he can defend the rim, score on the block and create for others. He’s not the playmaker that Mason Plumlee was in this rotation, but he’s shown that he can pass off the block to open shooters and cutters.
Portland should come away with a win in this one, but the question is: Can they cover the spread?
An 11-point spread is a lot for a team that gives up a decent amount of points (not to mention against a squad that can take advantage of lapses in defense by scoring quick transition buckets).

Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Recent trends indicate that the Nets have good reason to believe they can come away with a win ATS.
But the Blazers are coming off an inspired performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder and should have plenty of motivation to kick the snot out of a bad team with their eyes on the postseason.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Portland -11
A double-digit win is a lot to ask for from a team whose defense is suspect a majority of the time, but the Lillard, McCollum, Nurkic combo should get it done Saturday night.
