Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals between the LA Clippers and Phoenix Suns. tips off Wednesday, June 30th. That the series is still active comes courtesy of the Clippers sticking to their habit of playing best when their backs are against the wall.
With the chance to wrap up the series and stamp their ticket to the NBA Finals the Phoenix Suns came out flat. Giving credence to the adage of how hard it is to win the last game in a series.
It was arguably the first time this postseason the Suns’ group showed their inexperience and succumbed to the pressure. They’ll get another chance in LA while the Clippers will aim to force Game 7.
Phoenix Suns
No doubt Chris Paul is carrying the extra burden of playing 16 years without a title let alone a trip to the finals. The weight of that moment seemingly became too heavy for all the Suns on Monday.
Yet, of the four remaining teams, these Suns have been the most consistent playoff squad playing closest to their identity which includes being the best road team in the regular season.
Paul looked better in his third game back. The veteran shot 11 of 41 in the two games prior but was closer to his natural rhythm in Game 5 (8 of 19) collecting 22 points and adding eight assists. His perimeter shot is still rusty having hit only two 3-pointers in the last three games on 16 attempts.
Although the Suns have avoided the plague of these playoffs of losing their top offensive player, Devin Booker does still seem to be adjusting to the mask he’s sporting to cover his broken nose. He led the Suns with 31 points adding four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
While Deandre Ayton collected a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) it was a tough night for the youngster who seemed off-balance particularly catching balls in the post and handling the ball. He was also a team-worst minus -22.
Cameron Johnson continued his strong postseason leading the reserves with 14 points connecting on all three 3-pointers and grabbed four rebounds.
LA Clippers
Paul George delivered his best playoff performance to lead the Clippers to victory with 41 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Reggie Jackson continued his hot playoffs with 23 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a block.
Yet, it was a trio of Clippers teammates who set the tone providing intensity, physicality, and by playing instigator. Marcus Morris (22 points) and DeMarcus Cousins (15 points) offered physical aggression early in the match and stepped up in the absence of Ivica Zubac.
Clearly, the instigator was Patrick Beverley who picked up a flagrant one foul for undercutting Paul’s leg as he fought through a screen.
That the TV crew could point out a part of the reason why Beverley is concerning for Paul and Booker is that they know he could hurt them highlights the fact he’s known to be a dirty player. It’s a fair assessment given how he sent out Russell Westbrook years ago (as he called a timeout) causing a torn meniscus.
His head butt to Booker seemed coincidental as did his move to take out Paul’s legs but just as James Harden and Trae Young have perfected their movement to draw fouls I wonder if PatBev is equally adept at hiding his true intentions.
Jae Crowder also was penalized for a flagrant foul and is no angel but the difference is he’s not viewed as a player that opponent’s fear could injure them on every play.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.
- The Clippers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 4-6 in the last 10 contests between the clubs.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
I’ve felt the Suns would win this series from its onset and haven’t changed that opinion, especially without Kawhi Leonard playing. Barring a biased whistle, the Suns should wrap up the series tonight. Expect the Suns to come out aggressive to take the Staples Center out of the mix early.
