The Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets will tip-off Saturday at 8:30 in a match that will determine who moves onto the Eastern Conference Finals. Everything is on the line and both teams have extra investment to win.
For the Nets, completely restructuring their squad around three superstars will come under fire. Alternatively, Mike Budenholzer got an upgrade in talent and spent this season focusing on adjustments that were meant precisely for this moment.
It’s just the first season of the Nets Big 3 so there will be leeway particularly given the injuries, but Budenholzer’s job will likely depend on the outcome of this game.
Milwaukee Bucks
Knowing it was a must-win on Thursday the Bucks brought effort and played to their identity grabbing the lead from the tip never to lose it.
Unlike previous games where the Bucks’ depth was a factor, this game was all about the starters and the stars stepping up to propel them to victory.
Khris Middleton in particular stepped up to register a career-best 38 points adding 10 rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Giannis Antetokounmpo also produced a double-double of 30 points and 17 rebounds.
Most notably, Antetokounmpo stayed focused on attacking the paint electing to not attempt any 3-pointers and was more effective from the line (6 of 10) than he’d been throughout the series.
Jrue Holiday had another rough shooting night (8 of 21) making only one of his 10 perimeter attempts but played a solid game in spite of his efficiency with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Outside of the Bucks’ big 3, Brook Lopez and PJ Tucker chipped in eight and three points respectively with the bench producing only four points.
Brooklyn Nets
The loss wasn’t that surprising given Kevin Durant played the entire 48 minutes of Game 5 while James Harden played 46 minutes in his return.
Durant followed up his massive 49 point triple-double effort with another strong showing producing a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists but had an uncharacteristic seven turnovers.
Harden had a more productive night with 16 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Part of his success was based on being in a better rhythm in his second game back.
In fairness, Harden spent most of his minutes walking or stationary on the court so his effect may be more of a Bucks’ directed defensive choice.
Jeff Green who was so effective in Game 5, shot 2 of 9 only managing to score five points while Blake Griffin added 12 points. Joe Harris scored nine points but continues to struggle from deep (1 of 4).
Steve Nash elected to shorten his bench only using Landry Shamet for more than five minutes (22) but he scored only two points. The Nets won the reserve output 15 to 4 but it was all registered in five minutes of garbage time other than Shamet’s two points.
Kyrie Irving is out for Game 6.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Bucks are 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Bucks are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 2-7-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Milwaukee Bucks vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Durant and Harden played 40 minutes in Game 6 while the Bucks Big 3 each played over 40 minutes with all likely to log heavy minutes in Game 7 as both coaches shorten their benches.
The emphasis for Milwaukee will be to limit Durant and build a late-game lead while the Nets need to improve their defensive effort. Jrue Holiday is due for a breakout game while Harden is likely to improve in his third game back.
Ultimately, no team wants to face Kevin Durant taking the last shot and this series feels like it might come down to the final shot so I’m leaning to KD and the Nets.
