Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals between the LA Clippers and Phoenix Suns tips off Tuesday, June 22nd.
Chris Paul (health and safety protocols) and Kawhi Leonard (sprained knee) both missed the match but each team has a verifiable second superstar and each stepped up in Game 1.
If there was any doubt CP3 has had a profound effect on the confidence and character of Booker and the other young Suns that question got answered with an exclamation mark on Sunday.
The first contest hinted this will be a competitive, highly entertaining series. There were 18 lead changes and 18 ties in the first half, a superstar showdown battle in the third quarter, and several momentum shifts in the closing frame. This series is going to be fun!
LA Clippers
Tyronne Lue elected to go 10 deep into his bench playing nine of those individuals 13 or more minutes to offset the quick turnaround and potential fatigue from the long Jazz series.
One player who provided x-factor production was DeMarcus Cousins who appeared for only the third time this postseason. In 13 minutes he offered 11 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a block.
George countered Booker waging in a fun back and forth especially in the third quarter. He led the Clippers with 34 points, four rebounds, five assists, two steals, a block, and hit seven (of 15) 3-pointers.
Aside from George and Cousins the only other Clipper to score in double-figures was Reggie Jackson (24) although six others scored between five and nine points.
In the semi-finals, the Jazz feasted on the perimeter never scoring fewer than 17 triples but lost the series. In a mirror image of that effect, the Clippers hit 20 deep balls (42.6%) and lost.
Phoenix Suns
Something new for the Clippers is facing a team that is equally adept on both ends of the court. With all due respect, without Mike Conley, the Jazz simply deferred too often to Donovan Mitchell making their offense easier to dissect.
In contrast, Phoenix immediately showcased how their equal opportunity offense. Just in the first half, they compiled 16 assists scoring 34 points in the paint. By game end, the consistency was punctuated with 31 assists and 54 paint points.
Booker demonstrated what a great pupil he’s been to mentor Paul and picked the perfect occasion to register his first career triple-double of 40 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists.
His efficiency was also very Point God-esque shooting 15 of 29 from the field 3 of 7 from deep and 7 of 7 from the line with only two turnovers.
When Marcus Morris didn’t start the second half I thought Deandre Ayton had forced Ty Lue to make the first adjustment. It turned out it was injury-related but that doesn’t mean the Suns’ center isn’t causing Lue angst. The big man scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The trademark of this Suns offense is equal production and Game 1 was no different as all five starters plus Cameron Johnson (12) scored in double figures. Mikal Bridges (14), Jae Crowder (13), and Cameron Payne (11) were the others.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Clippers are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Clippers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free LA Clippers vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
The first game would’ve been easier for LA to steal with the rust factor for the Suns in effect and no CP3. Leonard and Paul are both listed out on Tuesday.
LA will make adjustments and likewise, the Suns will have shaken off the rust. I’m leaning to the Suns winning because hey, it would be on trend for the Clippers to fall down 0-2 in a series.
