Sunday, June 13th the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks tip play Game 4 of their semi-finals series.
Milwaukee got into the series in what could only be cited as a defensive throwback match with neither team reaching the century mark (86-83).
This match punctuated why the NBA has made rule changes that favor offensive talents. To say it was an ugly contest doesn’t do justice to how slow this game was. Each club had one strong frame with Milwaukee scoring 30 and Brooklyn 31 in the first and second quarters.
The difference in Game 3 was the refs allowed the Bucks to play with more aggressive defense and the result was it bogged down the Nets shooters. Expecting the same whistle moving forward feels like a stretch, however, so the Bucks will need to find their offense if they want to even up this series.
Brooklyn Nets
To that end, assuming the Nets would have another sub-100-point performance would be naive. Through 72 regular season matches, the Nets scored under 100 four times with three of those occasions between 96 and 98 points.
Thursday was the first postseason game they failed reach 100 points averaging 122.4 points prior to the loss.
It’s unfathomable Kevin Durant will repeat an 11 of 28 night at the office although he did collect a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Nor is it likely Kyrie Irving requires 22 shots to score 22 points (9 of 22). It’s even less likely the highly efficient Joe Harris will replicate another 1 of 11 (1 of 7 from deep) offering.
The spotlight was on Bruce Brown following Game 3 as he was the player who took the final shot instead of looking for KD. Part of the criticism likely falls on head coach Steve Nash for failing to offer options to get KD or Irving the ball.
Brown also collected a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
James Harden (hamstring) remains out for Game 4, but a big injury update lists Jeff Green (plantar Fasciitis) as questionable.
Milwaukee Bucks
Stopping the Nets may be the focus but offense is the bigger Bucks’ issue. In three games they’ve score 107 and 86 points twice. That’s not going to result in multiple wins in a series facing an offensive juggernaut like the Nets.
Milwaukee is playing far too much isolation offense instead of moving the ball as they did in the regular season when they possessed the fourth-best offensive rating (116.5).
The Bucks scored 16.3 points off turnovers during the season but are only scoring 9.7 in this series. Getting out in transition and scoring in the fast break is another issue which is partially due to how efficient the Nets are.
Mike Budenholzer needs to emphasize pushing the ball on misses or makes to compensate and the Bucks need to move the player/ball because allowing the Nets to defend in isolation is playing into their hands.
The Nets are NOT a strong defensive club although Durant, Brown, Claxton, and Green are capable but forcing them to move more could unlock the Bucks offense.
Milwaukee can’t rely on two players to amass 79 percent of the offense which is precisely what Khris Middleton (35 points, 15 rebounds) Giannis Antetokounmpo (33 points, 14 rebounds) did in Game 3.
Jrue Holiday hit the go ahead bucket and while he only scored nine points his effect was felt everywhere on the court particularly on defense.
Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Nets are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
Again, the Bucks bore witness to a team who came back from 0-2 down (Raptors) to beat them four straight two seasons ago and the first game was a dog fight. The question is whether they’ll be able to unlock their own offense now that they’ve gotten over the hump.
If they can’t, relying on the whistle to keep them in games is a losing proposition and I’m not convinced this Bucks club has figured out how to unleash the offense.
