The Six-Strings are hosting a playoff game in only their second season of MLS existence and Nissan Stadium will be a busy place over the next couple of weeks.
With the expansion of the playoff positions coming one year too late for Nashville (Finished 7th in 2020) this team didn’t leave anything to chance and were tied on points for the second-best spot in the Eastern Conference final regular-season standings. The Union and Nashville tied with 54 points but Philly was given the 2 seed as a result of their 14 wins to the Six-Strings 12 victories.
Philly and Nashville split a pair of home games with equal 1 – 0 results so the heads-up tie-breakers were the total wins throughout the season. Hey, that might be a preview of what is to come now that Philly got by RBNY on Saturday with the 123′ extra time thrilling win in Chester, PA to put the Union through to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Philly will host the winner of this match next weekend at Subaru Park, but who will they be up against?
Can Orlando City provide the Cinderella Story edition of the MLS Cup Playoffs?
The Lions finished tied on 51 points with NYCFC and Atlanta who squared off on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. Their 6th seed placement in the final standings was a result of the heads–up win count and the second tiebreaker was the goal differential with Atlanta. Orlando City only outscored their opponents 50 – 48 in 2021 which is the lowest of all 7 clubs that made the post-season from the East.
Nashville SC
It is only been a few years now that this entire Nashville Soccer idea has actually been a thing in the United States. Oh, I know this because I covered the NY Cosmos in 2015 and Nashville was one of the up-and-coming teams that we all knew from their U.S Open Cup appearances and plans to be ascending what was almost a soccer pyramid in this country… Imagine?
I know, excuse my French, but it f**king kills me how greedy Don Garber got when everything was the way it was when the NASL came back and tiers were almost happening in U.S Soccer. Peterson and Garber just never saw eye-to-eye and the growth of the sport took a huge hit, in my opinion, when all of that fell apart.
Anyway, Nashville fans will probably squeeze a good 25K into Nissan Park and that number really should be higher. Hopefully, it will be, but we constantly saw about 20 – 26 thousand Six-String fans at a normal home game this year.
Gary Smith is an old-school Premier League player and he still has that slow approach to the game with chances from transition and a chess match feeling for us watching. This game could be one that starts slow but Nashville but this place is simply a fortress for results and this team knows how to finish games.
In case you didn’t notice, there is only one team that didn’t lose a single home game in 2021 and we’re talking about them right now. Do you even understand how ridiculous it is for a team in its second campaign at top-flight soccer to be doing that? No losses, 8 wins, 9 draws and they will need it because Orlando City was the third-best road team in the Eastern Conference.
Hany Mukhtar has been outstanding for this team in 2021 having scored 16 goals with all of the experience he brings to the table. The former German Youth National has provided some huge moments in his career in Germany and he was the first franchise designated player with Nashville back in 2019.
Mukhtar finished 5th in goal scoring, added 12 assists to his ledger, and his teammate C.J Sapong also tallied double-digit goals this year with 12 while providing 5 dimes to his campaign.
Orlando City SC
Well, Orlando City is one of the clubs that can say they have not lost to Nashville on their soil over the last two years. These two teams have played to 3 draws in 3 all-time MLS meetings and the Lions were among the best teams in the East away from the Sunshine State.
Orlando City won 5 games, drew 5 times, and lost 7 times on the road in 2021, and that only has them behind New England and this Nashville team that finished one-point better than the Lions overall.
The Lions had their own pair of double-digit goal scorers this season as Nani and Daryl Dike each finished with 10 goals. The two are well ahead of Michel and Urso’s 4 goals apiece which leads to why this team barely finished ahead in goal differential for the year.
There was so much hype for this franchise when they became an MLS entity in 2015 and a new stadium and all positive things were supposed to come for the Lions. Yeah, that really hasn’t happened and last year this club finally made its first playoff appearance in their franchise history.
That didn’t work out to be much either after a one-and-done showing so this season must provide some hope for the fans and investors who have put a lot into bringing this sport to Florida. The line setters don’t really seem to care about any of that as the Lions are heavy underdogs on the road for this Tuesday road affair in Nashville.
Free Nashville vs. Orlando City MLS Final Analysis:
I am suggesting you slide down the Asian Handicap total and play the Over 2 & 2.5 at -115. That line might move up as match time gets closer but I can, at least, see the 1 – 1 to get half of that bet in, and then it will be a matter of finding the third goal to cash it outright. Let’s call this play the one with a little safety net in case they don’t find it…
