The Wyoming Cowboys (6-2) and 22nd ranked Boise State Broncos (7-1) have already staked their claim to a post-season bid, but this clash in Boise on Saturday holds quite a bit of weight towards an appearance in the Mountain West Conference title game as well.
Wyoming (3-1 MWC) and Boise State are separated by a single game atop the Mountain Division standings, as the Broncos have posted a perfect 4 – 0 record in conference play thus far.
The line setters see this game being a bit lopsided listing the home team as nearly two TD favorites, but we all know that means nothing in games of this magnitude. Wyoming has certainly not enjoyed playing on the blue turf in Boise, however, as they have never won here and are 1 – 12 in 13 meetings with the Broncos.
History what it is, this game is a big one this weekend and it looks like the weather will not be a factor. Oh, how the weather can change in a heartbeat around those parts though, but from the forecast I see we can expect a nice, partly sunny 60-degree day in the Potato State!

Wyoming Cowboys
Take 2 with teams from Idaho! The Cowboys already defeated Idaho this season so now they get to face another team from the Gem State. Idaho is no longer and FBS program, however, and this Boise State program is certainly nothing close to a Big Sky outfit either.
I think we all know that this is a completely different animal and the oddsmakers know it too. Wyoming can obviously see the line and they know that Boise is supposed to kick their ass on Saturday according to them.
The Cowboys’ first loss of the year was by 3 points to Tulsa and the other was by 4 points to San Diego State and both were on the road. The history stuff? Well shit, what can anyone from this team do about any of that 1 – 12 stuff? Nothing! It’s history.
This is about what THIS team can do this weekend, and an upset win on the blue turf would be huge for the program. Beating Missouri to start the year was a little impressive, although we know that Mizzou didn’t play their big transfer QB in that affair.
Oh, and speaking of QBs? OUCH! Now, do you see why this line is a bit high at -13.5? Sean Chambers, the Wyoming QB, IS DONE FOR THE YEAR! So, now it is up to a brand new signal-caller to have to go into this environment and win a football game?
Tyler Vander Waal appears to be the guy getting the call, and, at least, he has some experience to bring to the table but none this season to really speak of. Vander Waal has only completed 4 of his 16 passes this entire season, and hopefully for Wyoming fans that 25% isn’t a sign of things to come. Not good man, this is simply not the time to lose your QB, not that it would ever come at a good time, obviously.
The Wyoming defense has been a strength of this program all season, but not when it comes to stopping the pass. We are talking about a team that ranks 121st in the nation which allows 288.8 passing yards a game. Oh, Hank… Tune that arm up, buddy! The Cowboys are coming to town!

#22 Boise State Broncos
Hank Bachmeier leads the 24th ranked passing offense in the country, and that is one of a few issues for Wyoming coming into this weekend.
Hank sat out of the BYU affair before the bye week for the Broncos to give him some time to be ready for the stretch run of the season. Bachmeier isn’t even listed on this weekend’s injury report so the time off obviously did him well.
So, now he gets to relish in lighting up the Cowboys passing defense like every other program has done this year. You know, when you look at Hank’s stats they are basically just okay to me, but the 7 wins from 8 games make any of his personal numbers really inconsequential.
Numbers and winning games are two separate entities and the guys who are just natural leaders win games regardless of the numbers sometimes. The 9 – 4 TD to INT ratio doesn’t stand out as impressive to anyone, and his 1,760 yards is just, well, good.
Bachmeier and John Hightower have built a little cohesion, as Hightower leads the receiving corps with 584 yards and 5 scores.
If you haven’t seen George Halani run the ball yet, you should check the dude out this weekend. The 5-11 195-pounder out of Cali has 113 carries for 589 yards with 5 totes to the end zone and has caught 2 TD passes as well.
This could get ugly with Wyoming putting a new QB on the field against a Bronco defense that ranks 24th against the run. Naturally, you would think Wyoming would want to run the ball to not put all the pressure on Vander Waal to beat them. The Broncos will game plan for that and DC Jeff Schmedding will have his front 7 prepared to stop the run game and force the action from Vander Waal. That will not likely work out well, so let’s jump on a prediction and get y’all out of here.
