West Virginia opened the 2022 season with a pair of non-conference losses to Kansas and Pitt in the Backyard Brawl, but jumped into the win column with a dominant victory over Towson. WVU then picked up a quality victory in Blacksburg over Virginia Tech, nabbing the Black Diamond trophy along the way. The Mountaineers dropped their second Big 12 game to Texas, but the 10-year anniversary of Geno Smith’s all-time performance provided aura and the spark they needed to pin a conference win.
In Week 7, West Virginia (+3) defeated Baylor, 43-40, improving to 3-3 against the spread this season.

J.T. Daniels may have finally found a home here in the college game. After stints with USC and UGA, the junior quarterback has settled in as WVU’s guy. Daniels performed well versus Tech on the road, and in the win over Baylor.
Daniels has thrown for 1,492 passing yards with nine touchdowns to three interceptions on the season.
CJ Donaldson’s explosiveness will be missed for this one, as the freshman back is set to miss this weekend’s bout. Donaldson led WVU with 389 rushing yards prior to the injury, but Tony Mathis Jr.exploded for a career-high 163 yards versus Baylor and now leads WVU with 459 rushing yards.
Bryce Ford-Wheaton and Sam James have given Daniels’ an experienced pair of wideouts to target. Ford-Wheaton caught a career-high 11 against KU, and gained 93 yards versus Texas. He leads WVU in receptions (40), receiving yards (463), and touchdowns (4). James has 23 catches for 357 yards, while Kaden Prather has come alive and he’s second on the team with 36 catches for 369 yards.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech jumped out to a 2-0 start with home victories over Murray State and Houston. TTU held off a late rally from in-state foe Houston and picked up a walkoff overtime victory on a touchdown run from quarterback Donovan Smith.
The Red Raiders lost to N.C. State in another notable non-conference matchup, but they sent off longtime Lone Star rival Texas with a defeat, beating the Longhorns in overtime. That Big 12 success was short lived, as the Red Raiders found trouble in Manhattan with Kansas State in Week 5, and even more in Stillwater last time out.
In Week 6, Texas Tech loss to Oklahoma State, 41-31, improving to 3-3 ATS this season by a single point.
TTU scores 34.3 points per game, while allowing 29.8 ppg.
Texas Tech went down to QB3 last time out in Stillwater and the results were surprisingly positive. True freshman Behren Morton made his first start and totaled over 420 yards in a hostile environment, raising the eyebrows of many within the Texas Tech program. Donovan Smith has been more than serviceable, leading TTU to wins over Texas and Houston, and his return to health will give them a complicated luxury at the QB position.
Smith has thrown for 1,475 passing yards with 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions in the season, while also scoring four times on the ground.
Veteran backs Sarodorick Thompson and Tahj Brooks split the minimum rushing load for TTU. Thompson had his best outing of the season versus the Cowboys, and he now leads the team with 310 rushing yards. Brooks has gained 215 yards and tied Smith for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with 4.
The Red Raiders possess a solid wideout core per usual. Myles Price is dynamic out of the slot, and despite missing the Ok. State game, he still leads the team with 31 receptions. Jerald Bradley leads the group in yardage at 317 receiving yards after a big game last time out.
