Here’s why I’m backing an UNDER bet below in my Mountaineers Cyclones free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Mountaineers vs. Cyclones Gameday
West Virginia travels to Ames for a Week 5 Big 12 matchup with Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium. Rich Rodriguez’s Mountaineers enter at 3-1, while Jimmy Rogers and the Cyclones are 2-2.
Both teams are coming off losses in their conference openers.
West Virginia now leaves Morgantown for the first time this season. Iowa State stays home for the second consecutive week, looking to avoid dropping below .500.
Both teams need a Big 12 response, but neither arrives without something fairly significant to fix.
The Mountaineers have built their offense around a punishing rushing attack. Iowa State has also been comfortable keeping the ball on the ground, setting up a matchup where patience could matter more than fireworks.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Iowa State Cyclones Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Iowa State a modest home favorite. The Cyclones are -159 on the moneyline, West Virginia is +133, and Iowa State is laying 3.5 points.
The opening total is 52.5.
West Virginia suffered its first loss last week, falling 41-24 to Oklahoma State after leading 14-13 at halftime. The Mountaineers were outscored 28-10 after the break.
Iowa State is coming off a 31-17 home loss to Utah.
The Cyclones fell behind 24-3 before scoring two second-half TD’s to make things interesting. Utah eventually put the game away late.
The recent series has tilted toward Iowa State.
The Cyclones won 28-16 in Morgantown in 2024 and have taken five of the last six meetings. West Virginia’s lone victory during that stretch came in 2021.

Cyclones Stats
Iowa State dug itself a hole almost immediately against Utah.
The Cyclones surrendered a 54-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and trailed by 17 after the opening quarter. They settled down considerably from there, but the early damage left the offense playing catch-up most of the afternoon.
Aiden Flora remains the centerpiece of Iowa State’s ground game.
Flora has rushed for 382 yards and 3 TD’s through four games. His biggest afternoon came against Bowling Green, when he piled up 194 yards on the ground.
The Cyclones have been considerably better defensively.
Iowa State is allowing only 16 points and 272.5 yards per game under Rogers’ new four-man front. The Cyclones have also created five takeaways and recorded seven sacks.
That’s a pretty useful combination when the offense isn’t exactly scaring anybody into hiding behind the couch.
Iowa State has been built to control games, which makes another possession-by-possession fight perfectly acceptable.
The Cyclones now get a West Virginia offense that brings plenty of rushing power to Ames. Keeping that attack from producing explosive runs will be the priority.
Mountaineers Stats
West Virginia’s rushing attack was hardly the problem against Oklahoma State.
The Mountaineers piled up 334 yards on the ground, with Cam Cook rushing for 193 yards on 29 carries. Michael Hawkins Jr. added 102 as West Virginia repeatedly hurt the Cowboys between the tackles and on the perimeter.
The problem was what happened on the other side of the football.
Oklahoma State generated 609 total yards, including 389 through the air. West Virginia’s secondary surrendered several explosive plays after halftime as the Cowboys took control.
The Mountaineers have rushed for 1,185 yards through four games.
Cook leads the backfield with 510 yards and 3 TD’s. That production gives Rodriguez an obvious way to control possessions against a defense that has been difficult to move consistently.
West Virginia has also created five defensive takeaways.
The Mountaineers need a cleaner defensive afternoon in Ames, but Iowa State presents a very different offensive challenge than the one they saw last week.
Mountaineers vs. Cyclones QB Matchup
Jaylen Raynor remains the starter for Iowa State.
Raynor has thrown for 639 yards with 5 TD’s and 3 interceptions through four games. He also gives the Cyclones another option on designed runs and when a play breaks down.
Michael Hawkins Jr. brings even more danger with his legs.
The West Virginia QB has thrown for 609 yards with 5 TD’s and one interception. He’s also rushed for 425 yards, making him another major piece of Rodriguez’s ground attack.

That mobility gives both offenses another way to extend possessions.
Hawkins is especially dangerous when West Virginia can keep defenses guessing between him and Cook. Iowa State’s front has to remain disciplined rather than selling out on either runner.
Raynor faces a different challenge.
West Virginia was vulnerable through the air last week, giving the Iowa State QB an opportunity to punish the Mountaineers if they devote too much attention to the running game. Raynor’s three interceptions also give West Virginia a reason to make him prove he can consistently win that way.
West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Iowa State Cyclones bottom line: both QB’s can hurt defenses with their legs, but each offense is at its best when the running game keeps the afternoon under control.

Mountaineers Cyclones Free Pick: Under 52.5
Here is my Mountaineers Cyclones free pick: I’m taking Under 52.5. West Virginia wants to run the football, Iowa State has defended well under Jimmy Rogers, and neither side needs to turn this into a Saturday afternoon track meet to play its preferred game.
That’s the setup I want with an Under. Hawkins and Cook can keep the chains moving without stopping the clock every other snap, while Iowa State is much more comfortable playing from manageable down and distance than asking Raynor to sling it around all afternoon.
If both teams want to spend Saturday chewing clock on the ground, I’ll gladly stay out of their way.
I also like the number because neither offense has to completely disappear for us to cash. Get a few long drives that end in FG’s, make somebody play from behind the sticks, and suddenly 53 points starts looking like a much bigger hill.
This has grinder written all over it, and for once I’m not complaining about ugly football. Ugly pays exactly the same. Give me Mountaineers-Cyclones Under 52.5.
