There are plenty of story lines in this one when the Washington Huskies’ Chris Peterson returns to Boise State for the first time since joining Washington.
Not only that, but both squads are looking for their next starting quarterback.
Also waiting for Peterson and crew in Boise is the notorious blue turf as well an impressive 12-game home win streak. With one team being touted as a potential undefeated team and the other trying to find its identity, this game is going to be an all out brawl.
The Broncos team is loaded and the young Huskies are hungry for action and to solidify their starting roles.
This is one of FIVE Friday night games for the Broncos and one of the very few times a Pac-12 school has visited a Mountain West school – a move many believe is not wise.
While the obvious local and national headlines will be pointed at Peterson’s return to Boise, there is a much larger battle brewing in Montlake.
The Huskies lost their starting QB from last season, who retired due to injury, and are currently deciding between FOUR guys vying for the role. Many believe freshman Jake Browning will get the nod, but nothing is set in stone until Peterson announces it on game day.
Also an under-mentioned story line is the fact that the Huskies are only returning nine starters this season. Most skill positions are up for grabs and the jobs for starting offensive and defensive linemen have been fierce.
This Washington team will be young this season and ready to show Coach Peterson in his second season that they can adapt to his new style of play.
One understated aspect not being mentioned in the Peterson Return saga is the fact that Peterson mentored Harsin while he served as Peterson’s Offensive Coordinator. It would be remiss of him not to take advantage of that sole fact.
The 12 game home win streak by these Broncos is impressive. Even more impressive is that multiple outlets are picking them to run the table and make a run at a top bowl game. These expectations are heavy, but with 17 returning starters, they are not improbable.
Sophomore Ryan Finley is taking over at signal caller from last year’s starter Grant Hedrick. While everyone is ready to put their trust in Finley, there could be reason to worry at running back, where the departed Jay Ajayi will be replaced by a committee of three backs.
This could very easily turn out favorably for the Broncos, but it could also be what hurts them.
This game against the Huskies will be a good measuring stick at how these position groups will hold up this season.
