The Wisconsin Badgers and Wake Forrest Demon Deacons will be meeting up in Charlotte, North Carolina to square off in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Wednesday, December 30th.
Wisconsin who sits at 3-3, needs a win to avoid its first losing season since 2001. On the other hand, Wake Forest will be playing just its third game since the end of October due to a bunch of cancellations with COVID-19. Over the last 5 years, Wisconsin holds a 4-1 bowl record with Paul Chryst coaching at the helm.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest will be playing in its fifth consecutive bowl game under head coach Dave Clawson. The Demon Deacons are looking to avoid their first losing season since 2015 and it would be their third under Dave Clawson in the last seven years if they manage to lose.
The Demon Deacons’ offense is led by quarterback Sam Hartman, who is trying to cap off a strong sophomore campaign. The redshirt sophomore has thrown for 1,906 yards with 10 touchdowns and only one interception this season while adding two more scores on the ground. Hartman didn’t throw a pick until the final game of the regular season and only lost two games by double-digits this year.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore leads an offense that is scoring 37.0 points (19th in the FBS) and averaging 435.3 yards of total offense per game (46th in FBS).
Wake Forest surrenders 31.6 points per game and 456.9 yards of total offense per game. The Demon Deacons were particularly exposed against the ground game, allowing 191 rushing yards per contest. The front seven will have to try to hold strong as they are going up against the 59th best rushing attack in the FBS in the Badgers with 171.7 rushing yards per game.
Wisconsin Badgers
Wisconsin looked like the only team that was going to give Ohio State trouble through the first two games but has had their season derailed since due to COVID-19. The Badgers have had three games canceled in what was already a shortened Big-10 regular season.
True freshman Graham Mertz has had really tough season dealing with COVID for a period of time and then injuries. He now finds himself back on the injured list and questionable for this game with an upper-body injury after getting hit in the chest against Minnesota. The Badgers may have to turn to sophomore QB Chase Wolf since senior QB Jack Coan entered the transfer portal earlier this week.
Offensively, are ranked 102nd out of 127 teams in the FBS. They average just 20.3 points per contest, but they have only played six games this season. Garrett Groshek leads the Badgers in scrimmage yards with 364 this season. WR Jake Ferguson leads the team in total touchdowns with four this season. He also leads the receiving corps in yards.
The defense has been the Badgers’ bread and butter this season like usual. Wisconsin ranks among the nation leaders in scoring defense, total defense, and rushing defense this season. The Badgers allow just an average of 15.7 points which is 6th in the FBS and a nation-leading 263.5 yards of total offense per game.
