The Virginia Cavaliers will host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this Saturday at Scott Stadium. UVA will enter this on the heels of their first loss of the season, Wake enters off of a big win over Florida State.
HISTORY: These two ACC schools have only met five times since 2003, and Virginia leads the all-time series 34-16.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest is coming off of their biggest win over Florida State in school history. The Demon Deacons jumped out to a double-digit lead at halftime, and shut the Seminoles out in the second, en route to a 35-14 win. Wake has gotten off to a good start this season, but this trip to Charlottesville will mark their first road game.
Redshirt sophomore Sam Hartman is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the country. He’s been pretty good through three starts, passing for 685 yards with six touchdowns to one interception, and while adding 66 rushing yards and a score on the ground.
Christian Beal-Smith led the team in rushing last season, and he’s on pace to do so again. After totaling a season-high 95 yards in the win over Florida State, he’s up to 229 yards and four touchdowns on the season. Christian Turner has ran for 120 yards on 32 carries and two scores as well
Sophomore receiver A.T. Perry had a big game against FSU, catching seven passes for 155 receiving yards, including a 49-yard touchdown catch. Junior wideout Jaquarii Roberson led the team in receiving last year, and he’s got 12 catches for 154 yards and two scores through three games.
Wake Forest harassed both of Florida State’s quarterbacks last weekend, sacking them three times and forcing six turnovers.
Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia found themselves on the wrong end of a shootout in Chapel Hill last weekend. After defeating four straight over UNC, the host got revenge with a big 59-39, handing UVA their first loss of the season. They’ve had no issues moving the football so far this season, but they were exposed a bit defensively last week.
Brennan Armstrong is putting it all together in his second year behind center. The junior quarterback is coming off of throwing for a career-high 554 yards in the loss to UNC, bringing his season total a nation-leading 1,298 passing yards, with eleven touchdowns to two interceptions.
The ground game is non-existent for the Cavaliers, as they’ve fully embraced the Air Raid offense. Wayne Taulapapa leads the team with 81 yards on 17 carries, and he scored the 18th rushing touchdown of his career last week. Utility weapon Keytaon Thompson has totaled 78 yards rushing, and 197 yards receiving.
The UVA receiving core is deep and talented. Dontayvion Wicks leads the with 346 receiving yards, after snagging seven passes for 183 yards and a score last weekend. Senior Billy Kemp IV leads the team in catches with 18, and he gained 216 yards and scored three times. Tight end Jelani Woods patrols over the middle of the field, and he’s caught 12 passes for 174 yards and scored in each of the past two games.
Virginia could not contain Sam Howell or the UNC ground game last weekend, but things should be a bit easier this week returning to Charlottesville and facing a slower-paced Wake Forest team.
Free Week 4 NCAA Football Pick
Both of these ACC teams have looked stronger than we’re accustomed too. Wake looks like it can be players in the Atlantic Division, while UVA boasts one of the more potent offenses in the country. No more weekday ACC snoozers, as it appears the conference has caught up with the times.
4* Free Week 4 NCAA Betting Pick: Virginia -4
We want to make the sexy pick. UVA’s offense is reminiscent of Graham Harrell’s aerial attack at Texas Tech years back, and after being overmatched on the road last week, we like them responding strong here. This will serve as Wake Forest’s first real test, and they may not be ready for it. Brennan Armstrong looks like a Heisman candidate, and we feel good trusting them Friday.
Take UVA’s game spread, and eye the over in what could be another shootout.
