One of the oldest ACC Traditions is occurring in Blacksburg this weekend as Virginia Tech will host Virginia in the battle for the Commonwealth Cup. The Cavaliers are red hot coming into this game as they have rattled off four wins in a row after a 1-4 start to the season. The Hokies got crushed by Clemson in their last game 45-10 and will look to rebound here.
Virginia Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers are aiming for their fifth consecutive win after grabbing just one win in their first five games. The Cavaliers were 6.5 point favorites in an impressive 43-32 home triumph against BC last week to improve to 4-4 in ACC play. Virginia has now covered the spread in five straight games.
Offensively, the Cavaliers are on a roll right now. Over the last four games, the Virginia offense has averaged 43.25 points per game and over 462 total yards. Most of this rise in production is thanks to sophomore QB Brennan Armstrong really starting to put it together at the college level.
Armstrong has completed 132 of 222 passes this season for 1858 yards accompanied by a 16:9 TD to INT ratio. He also has 529 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. But over the last four games, he has a total of 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
RB Wayne Tualapapa has seen his carries decrease lately and has tallied 387 rushing yards this year on an average of 4.5 yards per attempt. Virginia has solid receiving depth with three players logging over 300 yards on the season. Wideout Billy Kemp IV has been sound for at least 40 receiving yards per game and leads the team with 571 yards.

The defense hasn’t been the Cavalier’s strong suit all season. They are the worst team in the country out of 127 schools in the FBS at defending the pass. Virginia gives up an average of 314.7 yards per game just through the air. All together they are surrendering 440.6 yards per game and rank 67th in points surrendered with 29.2 on average.
Virginia Tech Hokies
Virginia Tech is having exactly the opposite kind of season the Cavaliers are having. Tech started the season 3-1 and now have lost four in a row. They will try to avoid losing a fifth consecutive game and their fourth consecutive game at home against their historic rival on Saturday.
The Hokies lost both their starting QB and their backup QB in the loss against Clemson. Justin Fuente was forced to turn to his third-string quarterback verse the Tigers, but he should have Hooker back for this game. Hendon Hooker hasn’t been great this season for the V-Tech offense. He has completed just 98 passes for 1339 yards to go along with nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He also has 620 yards on the ground for nine scores.
VA Tech opts for the run over the pass, so that should be an advantage for the Virginia defense. Khalil Herbert is having an exceptional season and has exceeded 100 yards six times this year. The senior RB has 1020 rushing yards on an average of 7.6 yards per attempt. Tre Turner has collected 504 receiving yards while Tayvion Robinson has 494 yards. The Hokies’ offense has really struggled to generate offense as of late, scoring 24 or fewer points in their last three games.
Defensively, the Hokies are laughable. They give up an average of 33.8 points per game which is good for 97th in the country. They allow opponents to gain 459.2 yards of offense per game which is ranked 109th out of 127 teams.

Free Week 15 NCAA Football Prediction:
I love the Over 61.5 in this game. Both these teams STINK on defense and I could see this game going over 80+ points easily. The Hokies give up the 109th most yards in the country per game while the Cavaliers aren’t much better and sit at 105th. Brennan Armstrong has broken out as of late since suffering an injury earlier in the season to NC State and the Cavs have averaged over 40+ points per game over their four-game winning streak. VA Tech should have their starting QB back under center and they should be able to put up more than 20 points on this Virginia defense regardless of how putrid he has been. Give me the Over 61.5 to fly beyond the number.
