The Penn State Nittany Lions will welcome the FCS power VIllanova Wildcats for an in-state battle.
HISTORY: Surprisingly, Villanova has historically given Penn State trouble. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 4-0, winning their 2014 matchup 41-7.
Villanova has started the 2021 campaign on a good note. The Wildcats pulled off blowout wins over Lehigh and Bucknell, before pulling off a comeback victory at home against Richmond last weekend.
Daniel Smith looks locked in during his third year behind center. The senior quarterback play heroically last weekend, going 26-40 for 350 passing yards with two touchdowns to one interception, and he scored twice on the ground. He could give a tough Penn State defense trouble this weekend.
Justin Covington leads a solid group of backs. After leading the team in rushing the last two seasons, the senior back has ran for 307 yards on 44 carries. He gained for 102 yards on 17 touches last weekend, including a timely 32-yard to set up the game-winning touchdown.
Jaaron Hayek returned as Smith’s top target. The junior wideout had a big game against Richmond has weekend, catching eight passes for 127 receiving yards and he caught a touchdown pass for the third straight contest. Fellow junior Rayjoun Pingle also has three receiving touchdowns.
Northwestern gave up a whopping 326 rushing yards to Michigan State in the opener, so they will need to shore up their play against Duke’s respectable run game this weekend.
Penn State Nittany Lions
6)Penn State ripped off their third straight quality win with a 28-20 home victory over Auburn last weekend. The Nittany Lions never trailed, and covered their third straight spread to open season.
Sean Clifford was extremely accurate in the win over Auburn. The senior quarterback went an impressive 28-32 for 280 passing yards with two touchdowns to one interception. He’s slowly emerging as a dark horse Heisman candidate.
The Nittany Lions have faced a trio of tough run defenses so far this season, so it’s been tough to get the ground game going. Noah Cain leads the backfield with 162 rushing yards on 42 carries, and he’s scored in each of the first three games of the season.
Jahan Dotson looks like one of the best receivers in the country. The hometown senior wideout caught ten passes last week against Auburn, and he leads the team with 20 catches for 245 receiving yards and he’s scored in each of the past three games. Parker Washington is second in both receptions (18) and yards (153).
Penn State had a tough time getting Auburn off of the field on third downs, but they forced a turnover for the third straight game and they’ve looked sound defensively so far this season.
Free Week 4 NCAA Football Pick
The history behind this matchup alarming, but it could also be deceiving. Spotting Villanova 31 points sounds enticing, but Penn State has looked really strong through three weeks.
4* Free Week 4 NCAA Betting Pick: Over 55.5
History is going to scare us into the over this weekend. We don’t see Penn State dropping this game, but this might not be a blowout. In-state rivalries bring the best out of teams, and like we’ve seen with Montana and Northern Iowa this season, an FCS program can come up and play an FBS school tough.
Penn State will win this game, we just aren’t sold on the margin so we’ll sway towards the total. Take the over this weekend in what could be a surprisingly contested game.
