Here’s why I’m backing a Vanderbilt ATS bet below in my Commodores Bulldogs free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Commodores vs. Bulldogs Gameday
Vanderbilt heads to Athens for a Week 5 SEC matchup with No. 2 Georgia at Sanford Stadium. Clark Lea’s Commodores enter at 3-1 and 0-1 in conference play, while Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC.
Both teams opened conference play on the road before getting very different results last week.
Vanderbilt suffered its first loss of the season at Auburn. Georgia returned home and remained unbeaten with another convincing victory.
Vanderbilt gets no recovery lap after its first loss, because Georgia isn’t exactly running a sympathy program.
The Commodores now make their second consecutive road trip. Georgia is playing its fourth home game in five weeks and has yet to be seriously threatened at Sanford Stadium.

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Georgia Bulldogs Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Georgia a massive home favorite. The Bulldogs are -3250 on the moneyline, Vanderbilt is +1366, and Georgia is laying 24.5 points.
The opening total is 51.5.
Vanderbilt lost 21-15 at Auburn after trailing 14-3 at halftime. The Commodores outscored the Tigers after the break but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Georgia beat Oklahoma 41-13 last Saturday.
The Bulldogs have opened the season with four straight victories and haven’t allowed more than 20 points in a game.

Bulldogs Stats
Georgia’s final score against Oklahoma looked considerably prettier than the offensive box score.
The Bulldogs finished with 306 total yards and only 12 first downs. Oklahoma actually held advantages in passing yardage and time of possession, but the Sooners repeatedly gave Georgia favorable field position.
The Bulldogs happily accepted the help.
Chris Cole returned a fumble 85 yards for a TD, while Talyn Taylor provided the biggest production through the air with four catches for 110 yards and a score.
Georgia also found enough production on the ground without Nate Frazier.
Dwight Phillips Jr. handled the bulk of the work and finished with 84 rushing yards, including a 54-yard TD. The Bulldogs didn’t need sustained offensive dominance once the game started tilting their way.
Frazier remains questionable after missing the Oklahoma game.
Isiah Canion and Chase Linton are also questionable, while Amaris Williams, Tyriq Green and Marcus Harrison are listed out.
Commodores Stats
Vanderbilt moved the football better than the final score suggested at Auburn.
The Commodores outgained the Tigers 311-279 but converted only 4 of 17 third downs. A blocked punt returned for a TD also helped put Vanderbilt in an 11-point halftime hole.
Brock Taylor kept the Commodores within striking distance.
Taylor made three FG’s, while Sedrick Alexander scored Vanderbilt’s only TD on a third-quarter run. Junior Sherrill led the receiving corps with six catches for 95 yards.
The Commodores continued making things happen defensively.
Vanderbilt forced a turnover for the fourth consecutive game and has recorded at least one sack in eight straight dating back to last season. That ability to create negative plays gives the Commodores another way to keep possessions from getting away from them.
Vanderbilt doesn’t need an offensive masterpiece if its defense can keep making Georgia earn the long way downfield.
Special teams need to be considerably cleaner.
Giving away seven points without making Georgia’s offense take the field was expensive at Auburn. Doing the same thing in Athens would be a terrific way to make a difficult afternoon unnecessarily miserable.
Commodores vs. Bulldogs QB Matchup
Gunner Stockton remains firmly in control of Georgia’s offense.
The Bulldogs QB has thrown for 754 yards with 10 TD’s and one interception through four games. He hasn’t needed enormous passing volume because Georgia has consistently played from favorable game situations.
Jared Curtis has started three of Vanderbilt’s first four games.
The freshman has completed 63 of 98 passes for 746 yards with 4 TD’s and 3 interceptions. He’s also added 133 rushing yards and 2 TD’s, giving Vanderbilt another dimension when healthy.

Curtis is questionable after getting banged up against Auburn.
Clark Lea said his QB has improved during the week without declaring him ready to start. Blaze Berlowitz has been preparing for additional work if Curtis can’t go.
Stockton enters with a much more settled situation.
His assignment is straightforward: protect the football and avoid giving an aggressive Vanderbilt defense the momentum-changing plays it needs to hang around. With Georgia’s defense and running game behind him, there isn’t much reason to start auditioning for Superman.
Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Georgia Bulldogs bottom line: Georgia owns the obvious talent advantage, but Vanderbilt has enough defensive disruption to make the Bulldogs work harder than this matchup might suggest.
Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Georgia Bulldogs Football Betting Trends
- Vanderbilt has covered the spread in 9 of their last 10 away games.
- Georgia has won 29 of their last 30 home games straight up.
- Also, the Commodores have a 9-1 ATS record after a loss in their last 10 games.
- The Bulldogs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as favorites.
- Additionally, Georgia’s games have gone over the total in their last 4 outings.
- Vanderbilt is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as underdogs.
Commodores Bulldogs Free Pick: Vanderbilt +24.5
Here is my Commodores Bulldogs free pick: I’m taking Vanderbilt +24.5. Georgia is obviously the better football team, but I’m not asking Vanderbilt to walk into Athens and win the thing. I’m asking the Commodores to stay within three touchdowns and a FG.
That’s a different bet. Georgia has been ruthless when opponents hand it short fields and easy points, but Vanderbilt has enough defensive disruption to make the Bulldogs work through a few longer possessions.
Georgia can control this game from start to finish and still never get where it needs to go against 24.5 points.
The QB situation adds some uncertainty for Vanderbilt, but this number gives me room to absorb some ugly offense. What I don’t want is turnovers and special-teams disasters gifting Georgia cheap points, because that’s how a respectable dog ticket gets turned into confetti in a hurry.
Make Georgia drive the field, steal a possession or two and keep the fourth quarter relevant to the spread. I’m taking the pile of points and living with the consequences. Give me Vanderbilt +24.5.
