The Utah Utes will travel this weekend and face their former Mountain West rival, the San Diego State Aztecs. SDSU enters off a road underdog victory over Arizona, while Utah dropped their first Holy War matchup with BYU in ten years last weekend.
HISTORY: These two schools were fierce rivals in both the WAC and the Mountain West Conferences, facing off in every season from 1978-1995, then from 1998-2010. Utah leads the all-time series 7-12.
Utah Utes
The Utah Utes lost their first Holy War game in ten years last weekend. The Utes went into halftime down, could not recover, and BYU would snap their nine-game win streak. Utah will look to get back on track here before PAC-12 play begins for them.
Charlie Brewer has been solid his first two starts after coming over from Baylor in the transfer portal. The Utah-BYU game in LaVell Edwards Stadium was a tough first test for the Utes new QB. He went 15-26 for 147 yards with a touchdown and a pick, but he should be a bit better with less pressure surrounding the game this weekend.
Micah Bernard and Tavion Thomas form a solid tandem in the Utah backfield. Bernard had a huge game against the Cougars, gaining 146 rushing yards on just 12 carries and a touchdown. Thomas has gained 133 yards on 19 touches, and two scores.
The Utah pass catches had a quiet weekend in Provo. Tight end Dalton Kincaid leads the team with 112 receiving yards, and he scored twice in the open. Tight end Brant Kuithe leads the team in catches (6), and he scored last weekend. Junior wideout Solomon Enis has 5 catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Utah was sound defensively despite the final result last weekend, but they did allow BYU to convert 11 of 19 third downs.
San Diego State Aztecs
The San Diego State Aztecs are off to another good start this season. The Aztecs opened up with a home win over New Mexico State, 28-10. Despite failing to cover the lofty spread, they came through for bettors in a big way last weekend in Tucson. SDSU picked up a nice upset win over Arizona, and they now have the chance to make lightning strike twice in the PAC-12.
Jordon Brookshire managed the road game well last weekend. He went 10-15 for 183 yards, with two second-half touchdown throws, and he added a score on the ground.
After leading the Aztecs in rushing last season, Greg Bell has looked really good through the first two weeks. He started the season turning 21 carries into 161 rushing yards and a score against New Mexico State. Last weekend, Bell lit Arizona up for 125 yards on 17 carries, including a 55-yard touchdown run.
These aren’t Don Coryell’s Aztecs, as they’ve leaned heavily on the run game under Brady Hoke. Tight end Daniel Bellinger had a big game against the Wildcats, catching three passes for 113 receiving yards and one touchdown. Ethan Dedeaux also caught a 43-yard score.
The Aztecs smothered Arizona and held them to under 230 yards on total offense. They also forced them to 1/13 on third downs and reached the quarterback four times.

We’ll receive another blast from the past when these two schools collide. We’ll also receive another appealing home underdog.
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: San Diego State +9
We feel really safe spotting San Diego State nine points here, and almost want to take the moneyline. Utah hasn’t shown any reason to fear them as nine-point favorites so far, and it puts the Aztecs in an interesting spot. They have the run game to control the flow of the game on their home turf, after watching the Utes get gashed for 200+ on the ground by BYU, we like them thriving here.
Take San Diego State’s underdog spread, and take a chance on their moneyline too, as they could possibly defeat their second PAC-12 team in a row.
