Utes vs. Cyclones Gameday
The No. 15 Utah Utes head to Ames Saturday for their first road game and Big 12 opener against the Iowa State Cyclones. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET at Jack Trice Stadium on FOX.
Utah is 3-0 under first-year head coach Morgan Scalley after sweeping three home games. The Utes opened with wins over Idaho and Arkansas before shutting out Utah State 33-0 last Saturday.
The first road trip isn’t exactly a sightseeing excursion.
Utah spent three weeks getting comfortable at home; Jack Trice should provide a slightly less welcoming arrangement.
Iowa State enters 2-1 and has won both of its home games. The Cyclones bounced back from a 16-13 loss at Iowa by hammering Bowling Green 55-7, with Aiden Flora producing 296 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.
These programs last met in 2024, when Iowa State escaped Salt Lake City with a 31-28 victory. The Cyclones lead the all-time series 5-1.

Cyclones Stats
Iowa State has scored 106 points through three games, averaging 35.3 per Saturday. The Cyclones have been much more productive on the ground, rushing for 611 yards compared with 454 through the air.
Aiden Flora has been the engine.
Flora has rushed for 328 yards and three touchdowns, including a career-high 194 yards and two scores against Bowling Green. He also returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown, because apparently running the football wasn’t keeping him busy enough.
Flora gives Iowa State the kind of big-play threat that can make eight points feel considerably larger.
Jaylen Raynor has thrown for 434 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. His job gets tougher against a Utah defense allowing only 75 rushing yards per game.
The Cyclones have allowed 33 points while recording six sacks and two interceptions.
Iowa State’s defense has done its part through three weeks, but Saturday brings a different problem. Utah arrives averaging 47.3 points and 518 yards per game.
Utes Stats
Utah has been rolling offensively, scoring 142 points through three games. The Utes are averaging 518 yards per game with 856 passing yards and 698 on the ground.
Devon Dampier has completed 72% of his passes for 690 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. He’s also rushed for 114 yards and two scores, giving Utah another option once the pocket breaks down.
The Utes aren’t asking him to do everything.
Wayshawn Parker leads the running backs with 154 yards and three touchdowns, while Byrd Ficklin gives Utah another quarterback who can contribute through the air and on the ground. Braden Pegan leads the receiving corps with 235 yards and three scores.
Defensively, Utah has allowed only 24 points through three games.
The Utes are surrendering just 75 rushing yards per game, which creates a pretty obvious collision with Iowa State’s preferred approach. Utah has also produced nine sacks and three interceptions while holding Utah State scoreless last Saturday.
That defense now gets its first road assignment.
Utes vs. Cyclones QB Matchup
Jaylen Raynor has completed 31 of 52 passes for 434 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Iowa State hasn’t needed huge passing volume because its ground game has averaged better than 200 yards per game.
Raynor’s job is to keep that balance intact.
Utah’s front seven makes that easier said than done. If the Utes can slow Flora and force Iowa State into obvious passing situations, Raynor will have to create more offense against a defense allowing only eight points per game.
Devon Dampier has been considerably more productive through the air.
The Utah starter has thrown for 690 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 114 rushing yards and two more scores. His mobility makes him difficult to account for, especially when Utah also has Parker in the backfield and Ficklin available in its two-quarterback packages.
Dampier gets his first real road test Saturday.

Utah has enjoyed three comfortable home wins, while Raynor already has experience playing in a tight road game at Iowa. The setting flips this week, with the Cyclones back at Jack Trice and Dampier dealing with a hostile crowd for the first time this season.
Neither quarterback needs to turn Saturday into a throwing contest.
Raynor needs Iowa State’s running game to keep Utah honest, while Dampier needs to avoid giving a home underdog extra possessions.
If both accomplish that, this has a much better chance of staying uncomfortable than Utah’s first three Saturdays.
Utah Utes vs. Iowa State Cyclones bottom line: Utah has been dominant on both sides of the ball, but its first road game comes against a Cyclones team built to run the football, shorten possessions and make the Utes prove their early-season dominance travels.

Here is my Utes Cyclones free pick: I’m taking Iowa State +8. Utah has looked excellent through three weeks, but this is the Utes’ first road game and their first Big 12 test under Morgan Scalley. Ames isn’t exactly where I’d choose to learn whether that dominance travels.
Iowa State has won both games at Jack Trice Stadium and comes in with a running game capable of shortening this matchup. Aiden Flora gives the Cyclones a legitimate home-run threat, and keeping Utah’s offense watching from the sideline works nicely when I’m holding eight points.
Utah has been steamrolling people; now the Utes have to prove that act travels.
The Cyclones also know this opponent. Iowa State went into Salt Lake City and beat Utah 31-28 in 2024, and this time the Utes are the ones walking into the road environment.
Utah deserves to be favored. Eight points at Jack Trice is simply enough for me to take the home dog and make the Utes earn every bit of it.
