With a final regular season game against Boise State for the Aggies looming next weekend, Utah State enters Fort Collins, CO as heavy favorites against the struggling Rams.
The Aggies carry a perfect 6 – 0 conference record into their final two games of the regular season, and sit atop the MWC Mountain Division standings entering this weekend. Utah State and Boise State are both heavy favorites heads towards their final regular season meeting on the blue turf next weekend.
Utah State will be rooting for 20-point underdogs New Mexico on Friday night to upset Boise State.
Should the Broncos slip up ahead of their home game with the Aggies next weekend, Utah State could clinch the title right here and now in Fort Collins on Saturday. A second conference loss for Boise State combined with the Aggies win this weekend, would essentially make next weekend’s game a formality.
Utah State Aggies
As important as it is for Utah State to simply try to win out against Colorado State and Boise State in their final two games, a big bowl game could come to a potential 12 – 1 Aggies squad come bowl season.
There is another reason this is a big milestone game for the Aggies. Utah State has only once won 10 games in a regular season, and their history of football is long and distinguished. Their only 10-win regular season came in 2012 under Gary Anderson, who went to win 11 games after their win over Toledo in the Idaho Bowl, 41 – 15.
Aggies Head Coach Matt Wells was the offensive coordinator under Anderson, and took the lead job in 2013 after Anderson’s departure. Wells has gotten the Aggies to a bowl game in four of his five campaigns, with a fifth bid already guaranteed in year 6.
Anyone who has followed Aggies football the last few years, knows that they have had issues keeping a healthy QB on the field for any length of time.
This year, sophomore QB Jordan Love is still growing his game, but he has at least been on the field for all 10 games this year. That accounts for a lot after what this organization has been through in the past with injuries to key players over the years.
Jordan Love has been inconsistent over the course of the season, but he has certainly had his moments in 2018. Last weekend goes on the list as one of those outstanding days in his career, after putting 491 passing yards. Oh, those 5 TD passes look pretty good too, when there is a 0 in the INT column.
Granted that was against a San Jose State squad that has been trampled on time and again this year, but the stats are what they are, and Love still had to go out and put those numbers up. Darwin Thompsons 140 rushing yards on 15 carries helped open the passing lanes, and Love took full advantage of the situation.
Colorado State Rams
The Rams defense.. Oh, excuse me, I just said Rams and defense in the same sentence? Okay, lets back up a bit.
The Colorado State Rams are ranked 114th in the nation in total yards allowed (463.7), and 119th in points surrendered per game (38.5). The Rams gave up 43 points to Hawaii to open the season, and the writing was already on the wall as to what we could expect from Colorado State in 2018. Colorado State has given up 40+ points five times this season, and 27 or more to 9 of their 10 opponents overall this season.
Nevada handed the Rams an absolute whippin’ last weekend at Mackay Stadium, 49 – 10. That score looks ugly, and it was exactly that, as the Wolfpack were up 49 – 0 at the end of 3, and basically didn’t care that Colorado State scored 10 points in the 4th quarter to make the score look better.
Senior Wolfpack QB Ty Gangi lit up the Rams defensive back field for 404 yards and four TD passes in the beatdown. Rams sophomore QB Collin Hill ended the day 23 for 40 with only 186 passing yards, but the ground game was completely shut down by the Wolfpack last weekend.
Utah State will know the result of the Friday night game with Boise State and New Mexico, but that result will only effect the Aggies if New Mexico provides an unlikely upset. that won’t happen, so Utah State will simply go out and handle their business this weekend in Fort Collins.
