The Utah State Aggies will travel down I-15 S to Provo and take on the BYU Cougars this Thursday from LaVell Edwards Stadium on ESPN. BYU will open as the -point favorites at home, with the total opening at 50.
HISTORY: BYU and Utah State are just two hours apart and have crossed paths in nearly every season since 1922. The two schools compete for the Old Wagon Wheel, and the Cougars lead the all-time series 50-37-3 after winning seven of the last ten meetings.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State opened the 2022 season with a victory over UConn, but they hit a wall in Tuscaloosa the following weekend and haven’t recovered. The Aggies were shutout by Alabama, 55-0, which then led to a 28-point loss to in-state foe and FCS power Weber State. The downfall continued in the Aggies Mountain West opener last Saturday.
Last weekend, Utah State lost to UNLV at home, 34-24, failing to capitalize as home underdogs.
Logan Bonner has surprisingly regressed after a fabulous first season at Utah State. The former Arkansas State QB has been turnover prone early in the season, and that might not be a good sign. He’s thrown seven picks over the last two weekends, and that can’t happen here in Provo.
Bonner has thrown for 753 passing yards with six touchdowns to seven interceptions through the first month of the season.
Calvin Tyler Jr. leads the backfield after coming over from Oklahoma State last season. The senior back had a big day against UConn in the opener, going for a career-high 184 yards. He’s been steady and he’d benefit from better QB play.
Tyler Jr. leads the team with 238 rushing yards through the first four games.
Brian Cobbs, a Maryland transfer, has been Bonner number-one option early, leading USU in receptions (12) and yards (158).
BYU Cougars
BYU opened the 2022 season with big aspirations and a pair of victories. The Cougars traveled to Tampa and dominated USF in Week 1, before earning big time win over number-nine ranked Baylor in their home opener. BYU then suffered their first loss of the season on the road versus Oregon, but they bounced back nicely last Saturday by pouncing on a former longtime conference rival.
Last weekend, BYU defeated Wyoming, 38-24, dropping to 2-2 against the spread this season.
Jaren Hall has improved shown big improvements at the quarterback position. Despite the final result, the junior QB threw for a season-high 305 passing yards and two touchdowns. With tough home tests like Notre Dame and Arkansas set at the beginning of next month, look for Hall to keep things going over this two-game relaxed stretch.
Hall has thrown for 1,164 yards with nine touchdowns to one interception, while rushing for 81 yards through the first four games.
Christopher Brooks has received the first crack at replacing record-breaking back Tyler Allgeier, and he delivered in Week 1, rushing for 135 yards and a touchdown in the win over USF. The Cal transfer has struggled since, and sophomore back Mike Davis received the bulk of the work versus Wyoming. Davis capitalized on his opportunity, gaining 151 yards on 17 touches.
Puka Nacua’s return last weekend will be huge for the BYU offense going forward. He’s their biggest threat with the ball and space, and his explosiveness opens everything up for the offense. Keanu Hill had a big performance against the Cowboys, catching five passes for a career-best 160 receiving yards, including a 58-yard touchdown.

Free Week 5 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
This matchup was a bit more anticipated last season and the trip from Logan to Provo usually provides the Aggies with a chance to shock the state and the nation, but this year feels a bit different. A game like this on a short week will be a nightmare for a USU team looking to avoid dropping their fourth straight. BYU defeated a longtime rival at home last weekend, and we should be in for more of the same here.
There should be minimum fireworks, and since the 24-point spread on a short week feels like a heightened task, we like the under for this MWC matchup. BYU should take care of business on both sides of the ball here and take care of their in-state foe.
Look for BYU to lift the Wagon Wheel Thursday, and take the under for this Utah-based battle.
