The Pac-12 became the last Power 5 Conference to kickoff their 2020 season, after hosting their season openers in week 10 of the college football season. Saturday’s clash at Arizona Stadium will be the Trojans’ second game of the year, and the first for the Wildcats.
USC Trojans
It took USC a few quarters to knock the rust off in their season opener against Arizona State. The Trojans rallied from a 13 point fourth quarter deficit to secure a 28-27 win.
They went into the game as 11.5 point favorites, and had to battle through four turnovers and two failed 4th down conversions en route to victory. Sophomore quarterback Kedon Slovis threw two late touchdowns in the effort.
The Trojans finished 2019 with an 8-5 record with a 7-2 mark in conference play. After taking over at quarterback in week 1 due to injuries, Slovis had a record breaking freshman season. He completed a blistering 71.9% of his passes for 30 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He is the centerpiece of Offensive Coordinator Graham Harrell’s offense.
Slovis is surrounded by a talented offense and one of the deepest receiving corps in the country. USC is capable of putting points on the board.
The USC defensive unit was plagued by injury last year. They are returning a lot of talent on and look to be more complete defense. The Trojans forced 3 turnovers of their own against Arizona State. They have a favorable matchup against a Wildcat offense that was susceptible to turnovers in 2019.
Arizona Wildcats
The Wildcats don’t have a lot to be excited about heading into Saturday’s season opener. The Wildcats crawled to a 2-7 conference record in 2019 and had their lowest fan attendance in years. They will need some kind of spark to turn things around in 2020.
Sophomore Grant Gunnell will be the starting quarterback for the Wildcats after splitting snaps at quarterback last year. He will be leading an Arizona offense that struggled to move the ball. They finished 94th in the country in scoring averaging only 23.5 points per game. Their receiving corps could also be one of their brightest positions.
The Wildcat offense was just plain bad last year. They ranked in the bottom of the country in most major defensive metrics, and struggled to keep opponents out of the end zone.
Their 35.3 points allowed per game ranked 112th in the nation. One positive for Arizona fans is that they return 10 players that have been starters at some point. Another is the hope that first year Defensive Coordinator Paul Rhodes is able tighten things up on the defensive side of the ball.

Free Week 11 NCAA Football Pick
The Trojans have much more talent and depth throughout their roster. Slovis has been incredibly efficient at quarterback and has had a full season of games and the offseason to get more comfortable. USC’s achilles heel last year was their injury plagued defense, but they have players returning from injuries and a lot of experience on that side of the ball.
Slovis and the Trojans receiving corps should be able to exploit the Wildcat defense. 14 points is a large spread to cover, but I am going with the more talented team with a game under its belt to get the job done.
