The Rebels and Spartans enter week 9 of the NCAA football season looking for their first conference wins of the year. While the Rebels are still alive for a bowl bid in 2018, the Spartans have already been eliminated from bowl contention after picking up their 7th loss of the campaign last weekend.
The Rebels fell 6 points short in their comeback attempt against Air Force last Friday, losing 41 – 35 to the Falcons. As +9 point underdogs, the Rebels carried a 1-point lead to halftime but came out of the locker room flat. After giving up 21 unanswered third quarter points, the Rebels defense eventually helped put their offense in a position to win the game.

The Spartans almost found their first win of the year last weekend, as they nearly upset the 27-point favorited San Diego State Aztecs on their home field. The Aztecs came away with a 16 – 13 win, however, and loss will leave the Spartans out of the post-season picture in 2018.
UNLV Rebels
The Rebels had a chance to pick up their first conference win of the year last weekend against Air Force. UNLV let a 21 – 20 halftime lead turn into a 41 – 21 deficit, and came within one possession of upsetting the Falcons,
UNLV were 9-point underdogs last weekend against Air Force, and now face a four-game losing skid entering week 9. The Rebels will have to finish out 4 – 1 to earn a bowl bid, although they’ll face Fresno State, San Diego State, Hawaii and rivals Nevada to close out the 2018 campaign.
In order to snap the 4-game losing streak, they’ll have to do it as +2 point underdogs to an 0 – 7 Spartans squad on the road. The Rebels’ have surrendered 177 points over their last four outings, as the defense continues to struggle against the run. UNLV rank 121st out of 130 FBS programs in stopping the run, giving up 230 yards per contest.

Team Captain Lexington Thomas needs one rushing TD to become the all-time touchdown leader at UNLV. He can pass Mike Thomas’ 37 career scores with a big weekend against San Jose State.
After picking up two touchdowns last weekend, he now sits with 36 career rushing scores.
San Jose State Spartans
The Spartans certainly didn’t look like 27-point underdogs last weekend, despite their 16 – 13 loss to San Diego State. San Jose State moved the ball well early in the game, and their defense was up to task all night long.
The Spartans first drive resulted in a field goal, and a 52-yard 12-play drive gave San Jose State an early 3 – 0 lead. San Jose State’s defense forced a fumble on the Aztecs first play of their second possession of the game, and the Spartans had another 8-play drive that resulted in a second field goal to make it 6 – 0.
The lead lasted two minutes into the second quarter, and the Spartans only trailed 10 – 6 going to half time.
Junior QB Josh Love is 0 – 5 this season, and has missed two games to injuries thus far in the season. He can’t beat you with his feet, but his arm is proving to be a valuable asset, regardless of the 0 – 7 team record.
You could see his composure this past weekend against a tough San Diego State defense. His arm kept the Spartans on the field to help convert 7 of 16 third down attempts, and he was 26 for 36 overall. Love has thrown at least one pick in four of his five starts this season, and his longest completed pass was only 29 yards this past weekend.
Love threw one INT and the team fumbled three times last weekend, although none of the fumbles resulted in turnovers. That does, however, lead to breaks in the flow for an offense that has only scored 84 points the entire season.
