The UConn Huskies have lost their last 7 games, and are in jeopardy of losing 10 games for only the third time in team history. Hey, we have another 1977 reference to make, as I did in the game with USC and UCLA.
UConn’s first 10-loss season came in 1977, and they too have been playing football since the 1890’s. Connecticut has lost no less than 9 games in 4 of the last 5 seasons, with their most recent 10-loss campaign coming in 2014.
While the Huskies hope to end their 7-game skid, the Pirates are facing their own 5-game losing streak entering week 12.
As Reid Herring recovers from his concussion, freshmen Holton Ahlers has now secured the starters role for the Pirates. IF you have bot taken the time to watch #12 run the offense for East Carolina, at least recognize that the future could be something to look forward to.
Let’s take a trip back to last season, shall we? Remember how the UConn defense got dismantled time and time again a year ago? They were ranked 120th or worse in 7 of 9 major defensive categories, and nothing has been fixed from that mess that was 2017. UConn lost a ton of players from that defense entering 2018, but it in hopes that things would turn around this season.
Not so much, as The Huskies rank 130th in the nation in pretty much every thing there is to talk about.
There are 130 FBS Division 1 teams, if that helps put it in perspective for you. There is ugly, and then there is what is going in Storrs this season.
QB David Pindell has the same ability to influence a game with both his arm and his legs, as does Mr. Ahlers. Pindell’s senior season has gone relatively well, although he was never going to be known for taking over a game with his arm. Pindell also leads his team in rushing yards, making another comparison to Ahlers of ECU.
The difference is, Pindell is over 1,000 yards of rushing offense, while their leading RB has 863 yards to his credit.
Pindell and Kevin Mensah are simply a one-two punch that will run the ball early and often.
East Carolina Pirates
Holton Ahlers saw spotted time through the first four games of 2018, but he has basically earned the starters role with the numbers he is putting up this season. As we commonly speak of a two-way quarterback, Holton Ahlers is the true definition of what you wish your quarterback could be. Now, it is only a matter of experience and gaining confidence towards next season for Ahlers.
Reid Herring’s injuries have basically left him watching the last 3+ games, but it opened the door to showcase Ahlers’ ability to perform at the collegiate level; and quite well for that matter.
Ahlers leads the team in rushing, and he has only essentially played 3.5 games this year. While it is great to have your starting QB involved in the ground game, RB Anthony Scott has only gained 268 yards on 78 carries this season.
Ahlers has already attempted 98 rushes, has put up 441 rushing yards, and has added 5 scores on the ground to his 7 TD passes.
Keep in mind, Ahlers’ first start came against the UCF Knights on October 20th, who last I heard are pretty good. Ya think?! He may have lost that game, 37 – 10, but he managed to put up 406 passing yards and 69 rushing yards in the defeat to the self-proclaimed 2017 National Champions.

The play you will be making will point towards this total, as 68.5 is simply too low. These two defenses, if we can call them that, have no chance against these two growing offenses.

Expect this game to have fireworks before, during, and after the game, as I think it is already 7 – 7 and they haven’t even started yet. In all seriousness, this is an Over begging to happen between two teams playing for next year. They could hit 90, and I will not be shocked in the least!
