UCLA and Chip Kelly continue to have a revelation season, but still trail Oregon and USC in the PAC-12. Arizona has been an opposite story, though Jayden de Laura has boosted his draft stock.
Say what you want about Chip Kelly, but it’s really hard to discount what he’s done this season at UCLA. Most will remember Kelly for his days at Oregon, or more recently, the time he spent with the Philadelphia Eagles, but the job he has done at UCLA is commendable. They’re a basketball school. The football team isn’t supposed to be ranked #12, but here they are.
After starting the season 3-2, the Wildcats have since lost 4 straight once they hit the harder part of their schedule. Arizona hasn’t had a winning football season since 2017, though you could also label them a basketball school. Jedd Fisch is tasked with turning the program around, and could finish with a .500 record in 2022 – a huge moral victory.
UCLA Bruins
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, or more affectionately referred to as DTR, is on pace to shatter his total touchdowns record and may even surpass his yardages. The fifth year senior has done well leading his team to an 8-1 record, with their only loss coming on the road at #10 Oregon.
RB Zach Charbonnet has nearly eclipsed 1000 rushing yards with 3 more games to go and has 10 touchdowns. The UCLA offense as a whole has done well moving the ball all season. They have an elite offensive success rate, coming in at 3rd in the country.
The Bruins shade more towards the run, and DTR is no doubt pushing that. The offensive line makes it happen. They’re #1 in the country in line yards and 4th in stuff rate allowed. As long as they can dominate the line of scrimmage, teams are going to have a hard time keeping them off the board.
And here’s the crazy part: Arizona is dead last in the country in defensive rushing success rate. UCLA is going to be able to move the ball and score at will. This could be one of those games where Charbonnet has 300 yards.
UCLA ranks a poor 100th in defensive success rate and generate almost no havoc. As a matter of fact, UCLA ranks just 98th in passing down rate, which means teams aren’t getting into 3rd and long situations.
Arizona Wildcats
The biggest revelation for Arizona this year is Washington State transfer, Jayden de Laura. The biggest positive of his development is that he’s only a sophomore in class, so there are years beyond this where his potential keeps rising. Whether he enters the NFL draft remains to be seen.
Arizona leans on de Laura for their offense, throwing 59% of the time. They’re pretty successful throwing too, coming in at 35th in offensive passing success rate and 7th in passing yards per game at 328. UCLA is just 94th in defending pass efficiency, meaning Arizona should also be able to move the ball.
The most striking thing about Arizona isn’t a positive. The defense is the definition of futile. I mentioned above they’re dead last in defensive rushing success rate, but they’re also dead last in overall defensive success rate, passing downs rate, defensive havoc and line yards. UCLA should be able to move the ball like the defense is barely there.
