The Tulsa Golden Hurricane snapped a 7-game losing streak with their 49 – 19 win over UConn last weekend. Hoping to avoid a second straight season with only two victories, Tulsa will be missing out on a bowl game for the second consecutive season.
Head Coach Philip Montgomery took the Golden Hurricane to bowl games in his first two campaigns with Tulsa, but only managed to win 2 games in 2017. Tulsa’s bowl hopes have already been dashed, but the Golden Hurricane can at least hope to finish strong and avoid another poor 2-win season.

The Memphis Tigers got one step closer to becoming bowl eligible last weekend, with their big win over East Carolina. Improving to 5 – 4 on the season, the Tigers are actually still alive in the hunt for the AAC West Division title. Memphis will travel to SMU and host Houston to finish out the regular season.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
The 2018 season started with a win for Tulsa over Central Arkansas, and it took until last weekend to finally get win #2 on the season. The Golden Hurricane snapped their 7-game skid by handing UConn a beatdown, 49 – 19, and now they’ll finish out the season with back-to-back road games against Memphis and Navy before wrapping up their 2018 season at home against SMU on November 24.
If you recall, last season when Tulsa went 2 – 10, their defense was to blame all too often, and it needed major reparation coming into 2018. This year, the Hurricane defense ranks 12th against the pass in the nation, although the ground game numbers still need to improve.
The offense is the reason for the lack of success this year for Tulsa, as they rank 113th out of 130 teams in passing yards per outing (167.6).
QB Luke Skipper went down in the fourth game of the season with a season-ending back injury, and Seth Boomer has become a household name already. Well, at least ESPN is having fun with it being that his name is Boomer, obviously.

Boomer hasn’t exactly grasped the offense that well, and his passing ability needs a lot of work. Finding success against UConn as he did last weekend, will not mean he has found his game yet.
He still has plenty to prove, because you can see his overall numbers in 5 starts, just like I can. He has a 41% completion percentage on the year, and really doesn’t add much to the running game either.
Boomer may be able to find some marginal success this weekend against Memphis, however. If the UConn win did indeed help him along with the learning curve, than he could be able to move the ball against Memphis.
Memphis Tigers
The Memphis Tigers scored double-digit points in all 4 quarters of last weekend’s trouncing of East Carolina, 59 – 41. The win kept Memphis in the hunt for a possible, be in unlikely, appearance in the AAC title game. Memphis sits at 2 – 3 in conference play trailing Tulane (3-2), SMU (3-2) and Houston (4-1). The Tigers have already lost to Tulane, but their games against SMU and Houston could still have a major impact on how the regular season plays out.
Obviously, a 3 – 0 finish will have to transpire for the Tigers to even start thinking about conference title games. Memphis came out as -16 point favorites on the early line, so one would think this should be the first of those 3 needed wins to start with.
Memphis had lost 3 of their last 4 headed to last weekend’s game at East Carolina, and as 11-point favorites they found themselves down 14 – 10 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Tigers proceeded to score 14 in the 2nd, 14 more in the 3rd, and finished the game with 21 4th quarter points to put the game away.
East Carolina did eventually tie the game at 31 mid-way through the 3rd quarter, so the win really didn’t come as comfortable as it looks on paper. Pirates freshmen QB Holton Ahlers put up 449 passing yards against the Tigers defense last weekend.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The difference that earned Memphis the win was their balanced attack, because their run game was clicking like a clock.
Darrell Henderson, Tony Pollard and Patty Taylor Jr. combined for 5 TD runs, and put up 280 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, QB Brady White went 21 for 30 with 362 yards and 3 TD passes without a pick in the win.
The play here points towards the total, as 65.5 simply isn’t enough to contain both the Memphis offense, and their defense. There will be plenty of possessions to find points as these two go out and try to find needed wins for different reasons.

Memphis should win this game comfortably, and the line setters see it the same way. The Tigers should be able to move the ball through the air at a fast pace all afternoon long. Tulsa will be able to have success against a suspect Memphis defense as well, so expect a high-noon shootout at the Liberty Bowl on Saturday.
