The Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Texas Longhorns will meet for the Chancellor’s Spurs trophy this weekend at DKR Stadium. Both lone star schools enter off of big victories over Conference USA teams.
HISTORY: These two programs have met in every consecutive season since 1960. Texas leads the all-time series 53-17.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
After surviving a scare from S.F. Austin a few weeks ago, Texas Tech responded against Florida International in a big way. A big second quarter led to a 35-7 halftime lead for TTU, and they cruised to their third victory of the season, covering the hefty -20.5 spread along the way.
Tyler Shough’s career in Lubbock has gotten off to a nice start. The Oregon transfer had a phenomenal performance against FIU last weekend, going 26-35 for 399 passing yards and four touchdown passes.
Tahj Brooks has a pair off 100-yard rushing games this season, and he went for 47 yards last week on 5.2 yards per carry.
Khalan Thomas led the team in rushing last season, but he hasn’t had much room to run just yet this year. The freshman back has only gained 121 rushing yards on 32 carries, while fellow freshman back Ari Broussard has 56 yards on 14 touches.
Erik Ezukanma has led the Red Raiders in receiving for the past two seasons, and he’s on pace to do so a third time. He caught seven passes for 179 yards in the opener against Houston, and he brought in six passes for 144 yards and a touchdown against SFA. Senior tight end Travis Koontz caught two touchdowns in the win over FIU, while Troy transfer Kaylon Geiger Sr. caught six passes for 121 yards.
Texas Tech has forced two turnovers in each of their first three games.
Texas Longhorns
Texas responded to a big road loss to Arkansas with a thumping home rival over in-state rival Rice. The Longhorns scored touchdowns on each of their six first half possessions, and went on to shut out the Owls 58-0 and cover the -26.5 spread.
It appears the the Longhorns are going to proceed with Casey Thompson over Hudson Card as the starting signal caller. The junior dual-threat quarterback played an efficient game against Rice, going 15-18 for 164 passing yards with two touchdowns to one interception.
Bijon Robinson is the key the Texas’ offense. He’s coming off of his strongest performance of the young season, going for 127 yards on 13 carries with three scores. Robinson has totaled 299 rushing yards and six total touchdowns (five rush, one receiving) through three games. Junior back Roschon Johnson scored on 72-yard run for his 13th career rushing touchdown last weekend.
Jordan Whittingham and Xavier Worthy line up on the outside for the Longhorns. Whittingham had a strong game against Louisiana-Lafayette, catching seven passes for 113 receiving yards, including a 41-yard touchdown. Worthy caught seven passes for 88 yards against Rice, including a 31-yard score.
After giving up 40 points and over 300 yards on the ground to the Razorbacks, Texas shut the Owls out and held them to less than 300 yards of total offense.
Free Week 4 NCAA Football Pick
There’s a lot of history behind this game, and while the stakes have been much higher than this weekend before, this bout might be worth a high stake on the visitors here.
4* Free Week 4 NCAA Betting Pick: Texas Tech ML (+275)
Texas Tech looks really appealing here as an underdog. Texas appears beatable, and the Red Raiders could win the most important position battle on the field: quarterback. Tyler Shough has looked good through three games, and while Casey Thompson was solid against Rice last week, TTU will present a much tougher test.
These rivalry games bring out the best in schools, and we saw Nebraska and Florida both cover and nearly pull off profitable upsets. Texas Tech finds themselves in the same spot this weekend, with a higher chance of completing the mission. Take a chance on their moneyline this weekend, and take their spread.
