College football is back and we have this Texas State vs Texas A&M game to look forward too this Thursday.
The last time these two sides met was all the way back in 2005 where the Bobcats gave the Aggies a game finishing 44-31 in A&M’s favor.
Texas State
Texas State is coming off a 3-9 season last year, but should be much improved this season under new coach Jake Spavital who came on board in the offseason.

Tyler Vitt will lead the offense here after Willie Jones 3 transferred out of Texas State. That leaves Vitt with the starting job who threw for 1159 yards last year, but threw a lot of interceptions (11) and will likely need to take a step forward if he is to keep the role as starter.
One big problem for Texas State and Tyler Vitt is the loss of All Sun-Belt tight end Kennen Brown who was outstanding last year and has been signed as a free agent by the Rams after the draft this year.
The Bobcats will also hope their offensive line doesn’t catch the injury bug again this year as they were atrocious last year because everyone got injured.
There is also quite a bit of buzz about this Texas State defense where pretty much everyone returns from last year. The Bobcats defense improved greatly last year and ended the year ranked 73rd. That unit last year made it real tough for the opposition to hit big plays only allowing 3.7 plays per game of over 20 yards.
Interestingly the new head coach hired his brother Zac Spavital to run this defense and should help in their attempt at further improvement.
Texas A&M
Texas A&M are coming off a 9-4 season where they ended the season with a win in the Gator Bowl over NC State with a final score of 52-13. Jimbo Fisher’s men can be excused from a couple of those losses, however, as they had to play Alabama and Clemson last season.

Even with all the talent they have this year, their ability to succeed may be hampered by their brutal schedule. They must once again play Alabama Clemson and Georgia. It goes without saying that the Aggies will need to pull off one or two historic victories if they hope to have a memorable season.
The Aggies will be led by Junior quarterback Kellen Mond who threw for 3107 yards last season with 24 touchdowns. He also had rushing upside last year with 474 yards and 7 TD’s. Unfortunately for him, and the Aggies, they will need to replace their star running back Trayveon Williams. In his last game for the school he rushed for 236 yards and 3 TD’s in that bowl game win.
The Aggies defense was excellent last year ranking third in the SEC, but they will have to deal with a few players leaving as well. Most notably was Daylon Mack who was outstanding in the run defense last year and was taken in the 5th round of the NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
On the other hand, though, Jimbo Fisher is a recruiting genius and it is likely next man up for the Aggies as their recruiting class looks excellent.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Aggies are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games.
- Aggies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games.
- Aggies are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games on grass.

It seems like a spot to try and get sneaky and bank on this Texas State team being better than maybe the bookies are letting on.
I do, however, think that the Aggies will be able to replace their losses effectively and should be highly motivated in their home opener to run up the score.
