Texas is coming off a quality win against Kansas State and suddenly find themselves tied for second in the Big 12. A win against top-ranked TCU would go a long way into solidifying their case for the Big 12 title game. TCU is officially in the College Football Playoff as of now and look to keep it rolling.
College Football is crazy. A few weeks ago I was congratulating Texas on a good season, writing them off, and now it’s conceivable they could go to Jerry World for the conference final. The Big 12 has been a bloodbath over the last three weeks with each team knocking each other off. There are now 5 teams at 6-3! That’s a quality conference.
TCU leads that quality conference and is the last team in the playoff. Sonny Dykes and Max Duggan deserve a ton of credit for bring the Horned Frogs into relevance. Can they keep it going?
Texas Longhorns
Steve Sarkisian deserves a ton of credit for turning Texas around. Not just because they haven’t won a lot of games, nor because they’ve struggled recruiting. No, he deserves a ton of credit for restoring the Texas stock. Their brand is getting revived, and many men tried and failed before him.
Texas secured a quality win last week in Manhattan against #13 Kansas State. Bijan Robinson stole the show with 209 yards and a touchdown. Despite running 30 times in that game, Texas runs a balanced offense. They’re not highly explosive but they are pretty efficient, coming in at 17th in offensive success rate.
The Longhorns have averaged 35.5 points per game in conference play, so they should be able to put up points against a TCU defense that has struggled to defend against explosive plays.
Defensively, Texas has done well defending the run (9th) but have also struggled with preventing explosiveness (90th) which is a bad formula playing TCU. They’re just meh against the pass and don’t generate much havoc, so Duggan should be in line for a good day.
TCU Horned Frogs
I find myself writing about TCU almost every week, but the Big 12 conveniently gives us ranked team vs. ranked team every week. Who wants to write about irrelevant teams?
We know TCU is a highly explosive offense (4th) and Quentin Johnston’s return from sleepwalking has been a big reason why. RB Kendre Miller also deserves credit for the offense averaging 41.5 ppg in conference play. Plain and simple, they can score.
The Horned Frogs don’t find themselves in passing downs often, but when they do they press the defense. They’re 8th in passing downs explosiveness, which truthfully means they’re never really out of it on any drive. Hey, they’re not 9-0 for no reason!
TCU is merely average in defensive success rate, but they are incredibly prone to giving up explosive plays. Watch any of their games for 10 seconds and you’ll know what I mean. They’re currently 125th in defending explosiveness, which is the same neighborhood as Rice and Va Tech. Texas should be able to exploit this weakness in a very obvious way.
