The SEC somehow finds a way to top itself every time, and they’ve done it again. The only conference that can serve up a potential national championship matchup in the midseason.
The Tennessee Volunteers will travel to Athens and meet the Georgia Bulldogs between the hedges at Sanford Stadium on CBS for what will be the biggest matchup of the college football season. Georgia will open as the 10-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at
HISTORY: Tennessee and Georgia have faced off in one of the SEC’s more back and forth series. The Vols and the Dawgs have crossed paths in every season since 1993, but no matchup will mean more than this one Saturday. Georgia leads the all-time series 26-23-2 after winning the last five matchups.
Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee football is back, and they come into this one as real threats to take over the number-one ranking. The Volunteers breezed through non-conference play, with a road win over Pittsburgh standing out. The Vols began SEC play with three impressive victories, starting with a win over Florida in their annual conference opener. Josh Heupel’s team came out of the bye and went into Death Valley and defeated LSU by 27 points. Tennessee then hosted College Gameday for the second time in three weeks and beat Alabama in arguably the best game of the 2022, 52-49.
There was no hangover for Rocky Top, as they scored a season-high 65 points in their homecoming game against UT Martin. Last Saturday, the Vols added another strong win to their resume, sporting their special Halloween uniforms.
In Week 9, Tennessee blew out border rival Kentucky, 44-6, improving to 6-2 against the spread this season.
Hendon Hooker has finally put it all together and he’s brought football glory back to Knoxville. Hooker came down I-81 over from Virginia Tech, and has put together two of the best statistical seasons in school history at the position. Hooker tied a career-high with five touchdown tosses in the historic win over Alabama, and he’s thrown three in both games since.
Hooker’s a gamer with a ton of experience (30 starts), who’s thrown for 2,338 passing yards with 21 touchdowns to one interception, while rushing for 338 yards and four scores.
Jabari Smith and Jaylen Wright have split touches down the line again this season. Wright retook the team-lead after a 73-yard effort versus UK, and he’s up to 478 rushing yards and five scores. Small has been a workhorse at times this season, with his 127-yard outing versus LSU standing out. Small has rushed for an identical 475 yards and a team-lead eight touchdowns.
Tennessee has a pair of studs at wideout in Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman. Tillman led the Vols in receiving last season, and he returned last weekend after missing the past five games. The senior receiver posted a career-high 162 yards in Week 2, and his presence makes this group even stronger.
Hyatt took off in his absence, and after his historic performance against Alabama, he’s approaching school receiving records this season. The junior wideout has scored multiple times in each of the past four games, including scoring five versus Bama. Hyatt leads the SEC with 45 receptions for 907 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.
Bru McCoy has also come into his own after coming over from USC to Knoxville. McCoy flashed in his first two SEC games versus LSU & Florida, posting a career-high 140 yards versus the Tigers. McCoy is up to 30 catches for 451 and two touchdowns on the season.
Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia has enjoyed another dominant season under Kirby Smart, rolling out to a 8-0 start with their eyes on another pair of trophies. The Bulldogs kicked off 2022 with an assertive win over Oregon, then shutout in-state foe Samford in their home opener.
Georgia’s first trip to Columbia went very well this season, dominating South Carolina in their SEC opener. Things got a little messy in their second trip to Columbia, as Georgia nearly lost to Mizzou before a timely season-saving comeback.
The Bulldogs shook back and pounced on another group of Tigers the following Saturday, defeating Auburn by 30, and they celebrated homecoming nicely, shutting out Vanderbilt 55-0. Last weekend, UGA traveled to Jacksonville for their annual midseason battle with the Gators at the World’s Largest Cocktail Party.
In Week 9, Georgia defeated Florida, 42-20, just missing the 24-point spread after a rally from the Gators, and dropping to 4-3 against the spread this season.
Georgia scores 41.8 points per game, while allowing 10.5 ppg.
Stetson Bennett continues to do everything you need college quarterback to do. He produces, pushes the ball down the field, and most importantly, he protects the football. The senior quarterback went for 368 passing yards in the season opening win over Oregon, and he passed for his highest total since versus Florida last weekend with 316 yards.
Bennett has thrown for 2,349 passing yards with nine touchdowns to three interceptions, while adding 5 scores on the ground.
There’s been a committee approach from the Bulldogs this season. There’s no Chubb, Cook, or Gurley amongst the group, but Daijun Edwards and Kenny McIntosh have complimented each other pretty well this season. Edwards has scored in each of the past four games, and he leads UGA with 442 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. McIntosh has added 597 all-purpose yards (332 rush, 265 rec) and caught 29 passes.
Georgia’s passing game is powered by their two dominant tight ends, Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington. Bowers brings unexpected electricity to the tight end position, as he scored off of two jets sweeps versus Kent State, including a 75-yard run. Bowers has 31 catches for a team-lead 547 receiving yards after an explosive 154-yard outing against Florida last weekend. Washington, a 6’7 mismatch, has given teams fits and has 19 catches for 332 yards.
Ladd McConkey has been the most steady threat outside, catching four passes or more in six of seven games, and leading UGA with 33 receptions.

Free Week 10 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
Just as Alabama played in two game of the year candidates, Tennessee will take their second crack in one of the most anticipated regular season games of all-time. The Vols come into this high stakes bout looking as strong as ever, and a win here would somehow top their epic win over Alabama.
Georgia continues to perform at a very high level across the board, but with one of the the weaker schedules in the CFB Playoff picture, they can make a statement to the nation on their home turf. This will also mark their final time between the hedges before their regular season finale with Georgia Tech, so their will be an emphasis on seizing this moment. How they respond to the best offense they’ve faced by far remains to be seen.
Tennessee has something special brewing in Knoxville, and it’s hard not to ride that momentum here. Josh Heupel’s team has been much more impressive than Georgia from an offensive standpoint, and the likely hood of their vaunted defense holding Hendon Hooker down feels unlikely. Completing the mission will be quite the task, but Tennessee is going to fight and they are real threats to Georgia’s chokehold on both the SEC East and the entire country.
Believe in Rocky Top, and spot Tennessee the points for what will be one of the biggest college football matchups of all-time.
