The Tennessee Volunteers will travel to the Swamp and take on the Florida Gators this weekend. The Volunteers are entering off of shutout win, while the Gators will enter on the heels of an admirable loss to Alabama.
HISTORY: The “Third Saturday in September” game has been played in every season since 1990. Florida leads the all-time series 30-20 after winning 15 of the last 16 matchups.
Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee responsed to a tough home loss to Pitt with a thumping win over Tennessee Tech. The Volunteers took a 28-point lead into the locker room, and doubled things up in the second half en route to a 56-0 victory, covering their first spread of the season.
Hendon Hooker returned solid results in his first start as a Volunteer. The Virginia Tech transfer went 17-25 for 199 passing yards with three touchdowns passes, while adding 64 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Hooker brings more versatility to the position than fellow transfer Joe Milton, who started the first two games.
It’s been a revolving door at running back through three weeks for Tennessee. Tiyon Evans went for 120 rushing yards on 16 carries in the opener against Bowling Green, while Jabari Small added 117 yards on 22 carries in the same bout. Jaylen Wright led the backfield in rushing week with 43 yards and a score.
Senior wideout Velus Jones Jr. is coming off of his best performance of the season, catching three passes for 65 receiving yards, including a 45-yard touchdown catch. Junior tight end Jacob Warren has scored each of the past two games.
Tennessee gave up 41 points to Pitt, but they’ve only allowed six points in their other two games. They held Tennessee Tech to less than 200 yards of total offense, and forced four turnovers.
Florida Gators
11)Florida nearly upset the top-ranked team in the country last weekend when they welcomed Alabama to the Swamp. The Gators looked good against in-state schools USF and FAU, played Alabama really well, and now they enter SEC play with a lot of momentum.
Junior quarterback Emory Jones has been flawed through three starts, but he played through adversity against the Tide. His passing numbers weren’t pretty, but Jones went 18-28 for 195 yards with an interception, but he added 76 rushing yards and a score. Although Jones has thrown a pick in each game, he’s scored on the ground in each of the last two games, and his versatility could give the Vols trouble.
Jones leads the team in rushing with 235 yards, but Malik Davis and Dameon Pierce have done a good job out of the backfield. Davis ran for 104 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown in the opener against FAU, and he had a strong performance against Bama, gaining 86 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown run.
Jacob Copeland had a quiet weekend against Alabama, but he leads the team in receiving after a big five-catch, 175-yard performance against USF, including a 75-yard touchdown catch. Tight end Keon Zipperer caught four passes for 51 yards last weekend.
Alabama QB Bryce Jones tossed three quick first quarter touchdowns, before the Gators really shored things up defensively, holding them to under 120 yards over the final three quarters.
Free Week 4 NCAA Football Pick
This is one of the games both of these schools circle on the calendar. Tennessee enters off of a dominate win, but somehow Florida enters with more momentum after a loss.
4* Free Week 4 NCAA Betting Pick: Under 63.5
Questions at quarterback for both teams gives this game a few ways to approach. We do feel like Florida wins this game, but after witnessing their effort last weekend, along with Nebraska’s, we’re approaching a matchup like this with caution. The 14.5 spread has already stung bettors a few times, and Florida’s not-so-potent offense is giving red flags.
With the Gators possessing one of the best defenses in the nation, we feel like the under is the play here. Both teams have played a physical style through three weeks, alleviating the pressure away from their quarterbacks, and leaning on the ground game. We don’t expect Florida to drop a second straight game in the Swamp, but it could just be a slugfest. Take the under, and if you’re feeling lucky, spot Tennessee the 15 points.
