The Temple Owls will head to Annapolis and take on the Navy Midshipmen for some American Athletic Conference action this weekend. Navy will open as the -point favorites at home here, with the total opening at 50.5.
HISTORY: Tulsa and Navy have crossed paths in each season since becoming AAC rivals. Navy leads the all-time series 7-2, after winning six of the last seven meetings.
Temple Owls
Temple has picked up a pair of wins but they’ve struggled versus FBS competition thus far. The Owls were shutout by Duke in Week 1, but responded by defeating Lafayette in their home opener. They hosted former Big East rival Rutgers, but ended up losing by two points. Temple shut out UMass in Week 4, but they were overwhelmed by Memphis their AAC opener last time out, and it got worse when UCF hung 70 points on them the following Saturday.
In Week 8, Temple lost to Tulsa, but made use of their home underdog spread, and improved to 4-3 against the spread this season.
Temple is scoring 14.9 points per game, while allowing 25.8 ppg.
E.J. Warner took over after Week 1, and his genes simply may have made Temple more competent instantly. E.J., the son of legendary Rams QB Kurt Warner, game-managed each of his first three starts well. The freshman quarterback threw a pair of touchdown passes in wins over Lafayette & UMass, but he’s been rattled by AAC action.
Warner has thrown for 1,236 passing yards with seven touchdowns to seven interceptions through his first five games.
Darvon Hubbard and Edward Saydee haven’t had much room to run, but they’ve split the load early. Saydee has rushed for a team-lead 160 rushing yards in six games, while Hubbard has added 124 yards. NDSU transfer and backup QB Quincy Patterson has also contributed to ground game in designed packages, scoring a team-lead two rushing touchdowns.
Adonicas Sanders has been Warner’s go-to guy early. The Georgia Tech transfer caught eight balls versus Rutgers, and four passes for 101 yards and a score in the win over UMass. Sanders has 28 receptions for 350 receiving yards, while senior wideout Jose Barbon has come alive and recorded 100 yards in each of his last two outings.
Navy Midshipmen
The tide has turned a bit for the Midshipmen after opened the season with losses to Delaware and Memphis. Navy (+16.5) responded after their bye week by picking up a big road win over East Carolina, then covering in their Commander-in-Chief matchup with Air Force. The Midshipmen came through once again for loyal bettors with a big home underdog win over Tulsa, then found themselves on the right side of one of the worse beats of season versus SMU.
In Week 8, Navy lost to Houston, 40-34, covering the 12-point underdog spread on a last minute score.
Navy scores 22.9 points per game, while allowing 26.1 ppg.
Tai Lavatai has made Navy competitive this season. The junior quarterback may have had the best outing of his career versus SMU. Lavatai threw for 138 yards, rushed for 120 yards, and scored four total touchdowns (2 pass, 2 rush), and nearly captained another upset for the Midshipmen. Houston overpowered him last weekend, but he’ll look to bounce back here.
Lavatai has thrown for 787 passing yards with four touchdowns to one interception, while rushing for 297 yards and five more touchdowns.
Navy has worked through multiple ball carriers to begin the season. Fullback Daba Fofana posted career-high of 159 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Tulsa, and he now leads Navy with 336 rushing yards. Running backs Maquel Haywood and Vincent Terrell II have provided some explosiveness. Haywood has 298 rushing yards, and leads the team with 6.1 yards per carry. Terrell II had a career-high 93 yards in the win over Tulsa.
Tight end Jayden Umbarger has been Tavatai’s security blanket, and he leads the team with 15 receptions and 262 receiving yards.
