Stephen F. Austin will open their 2020 college football season on the road against the UTEP Miners in a non-conference battle of Texas schools in the Sun Bowl.
Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks are coming off a 3-9 record in 2019 and a 3-6 record in the Southland Conference. Stephen F. Austin will try to build on their win total as they a good amount of starters returning to the team. They have eight offensive starters returning and nine defensive starters coming back for them to El Paso.
One of those starters returning is redshirt junior QB Trae Self who completed 212 of 397 passes (53.4 percent) for 2,550 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2019. Also returning is senior running back Josh McGowen, who rushed 125 times for 471 yards a year ago. As a sophomore he averaged 58.5 yards per game, appearing in all 10 games and making three starts at running back.
A great sign for SFA (Stephen F. Austin) is the fact that LB Marcus Mosely Jr. is returning on the defense as he led the 2019 team with 9 1/2 tackles for loss.
UTEP Miners
2019 was a year to forgot for the UTEP team as they finished the season 1-11 while going 0-8 in the USA conference. The Miners finished their season on an 11-game losing streak after winning the home opener in the first game of the season.
Third-year head coach Dana Dimel looks to lead his team to a winning record for the first time since 2014 when they finished 7-6. Dimel will have the task of breaking in Sophomore QB Gavin Hardison. After having very little passing action over the last two years, Hardison showed promise in 2019 completing 27 of 61 passes for 353 yards with one TD and zero INT.

Hardison also has a group of skilled receivers he can throw to this year in Devaughn Cooper, Justin Garrett, and deep-threat Jacob Cowing.
