Both of these teams open the season in this kickoff game and Indiana looks to improve upon a 4-8 season with 14 returning starters. They an offense, which was solid last season, but questions still remain on the defensive side of the football.
Southern Illinois is a FCS (Division I-AA) team that went 6-6 last season and has a tall task taking on an Indiana team that is from the Big 10 and has won 12 of their last 13 home openers.
The Salukis return 10 starters and a solid freshman in RB Cameron Walter, who will be facing an Indiana run defense that was not good last season.

Indiana will have Nate Sudfeld back under center and while Indiana’s offense was solid last season it was mainly because RB Tevin Coleman, who rushed for over 2,000 yards, had such a big season and he is now in the NFL.
Southern Illinois
Southern Illinois did play a Big 10 team last season in Purdue, but they lost badly 35-13.
Mark Iannotti had a solid season for the Salukis and the former Eastern Michigan transfer was named to the conference’s all newcomer team. However, he does not have a lot of weapons around him and will face a pretty good Indiana pass rush.

Southern Illinois got off to a good start last season going 3-0 before losing to Purdue. They lost 4 of their last 5 games on the season and in 3 of their last 4 games they gave up over 40 points.
Indiana
Indiana ranked 2nd in the Big 10 last season in passing yards per game behind Nate Sudfeld, who has some weapons on the outside. However, they lost their top 2 RB’s and they may be more one-dimensional this season.
Jordan Howard is a transfer from UAB and he rushed for 1,587 yards last season with the Blazers including galloping for 262 yards in the season finale facing Southern Miss.
He will get the workload in the backfield and if the Salukis cannot contain him they are in a for a long afternoon.
In terms of defense Indiana gave up more rushing yards per game and more passing yards per game than Southern Illinois, but you have to take that with a grain of salt.
The Hoosiers play in the stcked Big 10 while the Salukis are not even a Division 1 program.

The Hoosiers have big time issues on the defensive side of the ball, but can Southern Illinois take advantage of that?
