The 6 – 1 San Diego State Aztecs sit on top of the MWC West Division standings entering week 9 of the season, and they’ll try to build on their current 3-game win streak when they face the UNLV Rebels on Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.
With 1 loss to conference foe Utah State on the campaign, the Aztecs have relied on their defense to navigate a 6-win season, and bowl eligibility has already been secured for head coach Rocky Long.
Long is in season number 9 with the Aztecs and the man can now claim that he has gotten his team to the post-season every year that he has been manning the San Diego State sidelines.
The Rebs? Well, not so much the same story because head coach Tony Sanchez has no idea what bowl game looks like in this his 5th year with UNLV. Sanchez has never toppled the 4-win plateau in his stead in Las Vegas (2017), and at 2 – 5 it sure looks like it will be another losing season for the UNLV faithful.

San Diego State Aztecs
Not only does head coach Rocky Long have a bowl streak going, but he gets the luxury of a bye weekend coming up after this affair to gather his things and finish the last 4 games of the season.
At this point, we are all eyeing that meeting with Fresno State on November 15th because it could be the game that ultimately goes on to the conference title game. Currently, the Aztecs are sitting pretty at 3 – 1 in MWC play and 6 – 1 overall, but we all know how quick that can all change.
Ryan Agnew has taken every snap under center this season for the Aztecs, as the senior QB wants to land in his first conference title game appearance. Agnew is piecing a nice season together, having 9 TD passes to only 2 INTs, and his 1,242 yards in the air has his team ranked… well, let’s not go there. Ahh well, we have to I suppose, as this Aztec team is ranked in the 100s or worse in plenty of offensive categories.
The passing game ranks 109th out of 130 programs in FBS with 176 ypg, and with only 22 points scored per contest we are talking about an Aztec team ranked all the way back at 107th in the country. But, how does 6 – 1 look? Okay then! LOL
Now that Rocky Long has his 9th straight bowl game bid in the books, a conference title game appearance and a bigger bowl game becomes the object of everyone’s obsession in the great State of California.
Oh, those offensive numbers hail in comparison to what this defense is doing in 2019. San Diego State is sitting at #3 in the country stopping the opponent’s run game allowing only 62.7 rush ypg. Stellar numbers for the 8th ranked defense in total ypg and points allowed a well.

UNLV Rebels
It has got to be tough feeling invested in head coach Tony Sanchez, as a season-best 5-wins in 2017 from his previous 4 years is the highest win total he has produced.
Are you wondering if this is a ‘bowl or bust season? Well, it is, and here is your proof of such matters (Link to article on LasVegasSun) It seems pretty clear to me that President Marta Meana has basically said that if this is not a season that produces a bowl bid, a new job search for Sanchez will be getting underway as will be the one for a new coach in Las Vegas.
Well, one more loss could put the Rebels at 2 – 6 and we know what that means, right? Well, it means that Colorado State, Hawai’i, San Jose State, and rival Nevada will have to fold like lawn chairs because beating the 4 of them could be what it takes to go 4 – 0 to finish the season to manage a 6 – 6 record in 2019.
With that said we are not there yet, although the line setters are pointing to another loss listing the Rebs at +13 at most books this weekend.
Amazingly, after the 1 – 4 start to the season, a win over Vanderbilt should have been something to build on, but nope! UNLV fell flat on their faces last weekend in a 56 – 27 loss to Fresno State, so it’s time to pick up the pieces again.
Armani Rogers has sat out of the last 3 games with a bum knee, and that ha led to Kenyon Oblad getting the call at QB. Oblad certainly proved something against Vandy, but then the Fresno game happened and it left us guessing how he feels about himself. We all know that confidence can be big on both sides of the emotion, because when it is up you feel good and when you feel disappointed it is down.
Rogers is questionable to return this weekend, and the team needs something to feel good about with only 5 games to play to save Sanchez’s job.

Sorry Mr. Sanchez but your job might be to search for a new job with loss SIX on the season coming this weekend. While it is nice to think home dog more often than not, there is no bark and no bite to expect after Fresno tore this team apart. Amazing like I said too, to see that win over Vandy be such a wasted effort.
I see the Aztecs escaping with a 36 – 18 road win, and I think this 45 on the total is a bit low too. We all know the defense for the Aztecs is spectacular, but they don’t need to be all that and a bag of chips this weekend when the team jumps out to a 24 – 0 lead early.
