Sam Houston heads to Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock to face Texas Tech on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM ET, with TNT, truTV and HBO Max carrying the game. The Bearkats arrive at 1-2 after blasting Nicholls 59-0 for their first win of the season.
They opened with a 24-21 road loss at Troy before falling 23-17 at home to Tulsa.
Sam Houston finally found the gas pedal, and now the road rises considerably in Lubbock.
Texas Tech is 3-0 after surviving Houston 28-26 at home. The No. 11 Red Raiders also own wins over Abilene Christian and Oregon State, although their last two games have provided considerably more resistance than the opener.
Texas Tech has won both previous meetings between the programs, with both games played in Lubbock. The Red Raiders won 80-21 in 2005 and 59-45 in 2015.

The opening board has Texas Tech as a massive favorite, with the Red Raiders listed at -15000 on the moneyline and Sam Houston at +4000. Texas Tech opened as a 34.5-point favorite. The total is set at 54.5 points.
Sam Houston’s first two games were considerably tighter than this spread suggests. The Bearkats lost 24-21 at Troy and 23-17 against Tulsa before unloading on Nicholls 59-0.
Texas Tech beat Abilene Christian 33-10, Oregon State 35-24 and Houston 28-26.
The Red Raiders are unbeaten, but they have covered only one of their first three games. Sam Houston, despite the 1-2 straight-up record, has covered all three.

Texas Tech has some health questions entering Saturday. Terrance Carter Jr. is questionable with a foot injury, while the secondary has also been dealing with the absence of Amier Boyd. The Red Raiders survived Houston despite allowing 175 rushing yards and will now deal with a very different Sam Houston offense.
Bearkats Stats
Sam Houston’s 1-2 record looks a little better after last week’s 59-0 demolition of Nicholls. The Bearkats generated 619 total yards in that win after losing their first two games by a combined nine points.
Landyn Locke has been the engine of the offense, throwing for 973 yards with nine touchdowns against one interception. He has topped 300 passing yards in all three games. Against Nicholls, Locke threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
Alton McCaskill leads Sam Houston with 140 rushing yards, although the Bearkats have been far more dangerous through the air.
Locke can sling it, which gives a huge underdog at least one interesting way to punch back.
Chris Reed leads the Bearkats with 204 receiving yards, while Grady O’Neill has 192. Both have caught two touchdown passes, giving Locke multiple options against a Texas Tech defense allowing 273 passing yards per game.

Brett Holloway has handled the limited backup work for Sam Houston, completing three of four passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Castellanos has attempted only two passes for Texas Tech but has been involved on the ground, including a rushing touchdown against Houston.

Texas Tech can do the heavy lifting, but Locke gives this Over a much better path.
Sam Houston does not need to trade touchdowns all afternoon. If Locke can create a few scoring drives against a Texas Tech defense allowing 273 passing yards per game, this number becomes much more manageable.
The Red Raiders have enough offensive balance to put Sam Houston under pressure early, and that could force even more throwing from Locke. For an Over bettor, I can live with that arrangement.
