After posting three consecutive shutouts, the Wolverines have surrendered 53 points in their last two games. Whether that is cause for concern or not remains to be seen, but Rutgers likely won’t be the one to make those concerns realized.
The Scarlet Knights have been blown out in their last two games after winning at Indiana and taking undefeated Michigan State to the wire.

Rutgers
The absence of standout wide receiver Leonte Carroo has certainly led to their offensive struggles of late. While he’s questionable to return on Saturday, he is just an offensive weapon.
The Rutgers defense has allowed 97 points in their last two games. They have allowed 34 points per game this season – 28th worst in the country.
While Michigan typically doesn’t go out there and light up the scoreboard, they have enough weapons to put points on the board.

While the return of Carroo would be a big help for this struggling offense, Michigan sports one of the best defenses in the country and he’ll likely be up against Jabrill Peppers – one of the best corners in the country.
Without Carroo though, Rutgers will be in big trouble. Michigan has shut down almost everyone that they have played. Quarterback Chris Laviano was playing well in the early part of the season but was awful the past two weeks.
Against Wisconsin and Ohio State – both solid defenses – he completed just 41 percent of his passes for 148 yards. Playing against Michigan’s defense shouldn’t be any different.
Keep an eye on Carroo’s status before game time because he will help the offense find some rhythm but it will not be enough for Rutgers to steal this game.
Michigan
When Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach for this Michigan football team, two things seemed clear.
The first was that he would turn the program around and put them in contention again. The second though was that it would take some time. He was taking over a program of players that he had not recruited to play there.
People expected an improvement this year but few expected Michigan would be playing this well already.
Their two losses are to teams that were ranked in the top 12 when the initial College Football Playoff rankings came out earlier this week. Their loss to Michigan State should have been a win and their loss to Utah was the opening game of the year when they were still finding their rhythm.

Running back De’Veon Smith was able to practice some this week but his status for Saturday’s game still remains unknown. Despite a rib injury, quarterback Jake Rudock is expected to play against Rutgers.
Michigan has been winning games because of their defense. Their defense is creating turnovers and forcing short possessions translating to good field position for the Wolverine offense.
Rudock, Smith, and the rest of the offensive unit hasn’t been expected to light up the scoreboard. They don’t need to.
They will need help if they want to find themselves in the Big 10 Championship game. Beating Rutgers is just a small step towards Michigan’s end goal.
