Panthers vs. Hokies Gameday
The Pittsburgh Panthers make their first road trip of the season Friday night when they visit the Virginia Tech Hokies at Lane Stadium. Both teams are 4-0 overall and 1-0 in ACC play, so somebody’s perfect start ends in Blacksburg.
Pitt has handled everything thrown its way under Pat Narduzzi, outscoring four opponents 157-34. The Panthers are coming off a 59-0 demolition of Bucknell that included a school-record 766 yards of total offense.
Pitt’s perfect start finally leaves Pittsburgh, and Lane Stadium isn’t exactly a gentle first road assignment.
Virginia Tech is also 4-0 in James Franklin’s first season, its best start since 2017. The Hokies rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit last week to beat Boston College 21-14 on the road.
Neither team is ranked in the AP Top 25, although both are receiving votes. Virginia Tech won the most recent meeting 38-21 at Lane Stadium in 2023, while Pitt has taken three of the last four in the series.

Pitt has opened 4-0 with victories over Miami (Ohio), UCF, Syracuse and Bucknell. The Panthers have been particularly nasty defensively, allowing only 34 points all season and posting their first shutout since 2020 last week.
Virginia Tech has taken a different route.
The Hokies blew out VMI and Old Dominion at home before beating Maryland 35-26 and Boston College 21-14 on the road. Now they return to a sold-out Lane Stadium for their first ACC home game.
The last meeting in Blacksburg went Virginia Tech’s way 38-21, but Pitt has won three of the past four overall. The Hokies lead the all-time series 12-11, so there isn’t much separating these programs historically either.

Hokies Stats
Virginia Tech has scored 173 points through four games while allowing 64. The Hokies have been especially disruptive up front, producing 45 tackles for loss and 17 sacks.
That pressure is going to matter against a Pitt QB making his first road start.
Ethan Grunkemeyer has thrown for 1,012 yards with 8 TD’s and no interceptions. He’s been efficient with the football, while Jeffrey Overton Jr. has supplied the muscle on the ground with 409 rushing yards and 4 TD’s.
Overton was the difference-maker at Boston College. He ran for 209 yards, including a 76-yard fourth-quarter TD that broke a 14-14 tie and sent the Hokies home unbeaten.
The encouraging part for Virginia Tech is that it didn’t need its best offensive night to win. The defense kept the Hokies within striking distance until the running game finally cracked Boston College.
Panthers Stats
Pitt’s offensive numbers are impressive, led by 1,389 passing yards through four games. Mason Heintschel has accounted for 1,191 of those yards while throwing 13 TD’s against only one interception.
Those numbers deserve a little digging, though.
All 13 of Heintschel’s TD passes came against Miami (Ohio) and Bucknell. Against Power Four opponents UCF and Syracuse, he completed 28 of 52 passes for 335 yards with no TD’s and one interception, although Pitt still won both games.
The Panthers can lean on the ground game when necessary. Damon Ferguson Jr. leads Pitt with 239 rushing yards, while the offense ran for 245 yards in the win over Syracuse.
Pitt’s defense may be the bigger story. The Panthers are allowing only 8.5 points per game and 53.3 rushing yards per contest, giving them a legitimate counter to Virginia Tech’s ground attack.
Now comes the part we haven’t seen yet: whether all of that travels.
Panthers vs. Hokies QB Matchup
Grunkemeyer has been steady through Virginia Tech’s 4-0 start, throwing for 1,012 yards and 8 TD’s without an interception. He isn’t being asked to carry the entire offense, which has helped keep the Hokies balanced.
Heintschel brings the bigger raw passing numbers. He’s completed 88 of 130 attempts for 1,191 yards, 13 TD’s and one interception while averaging nearly 298 yards through the air.
The matchup is more interesting than those season totals suggest. Heintschel has been spectacular against the softer portions of Pitt’s schedule, while his two Power Four games produced much quieter passing results.

Friday also gives Heintschel something he hasn’t dealt with this season: a road start. Doing it at night in a sold-out Lane Stadium against a front with 17 sacks isn’t exactly dipping a toe into the shallow end.
Grunkemeyer gets the friendlier environment, but Pitt’s defense has earned plenty of respect. The Panthers have surrendered just 34 points all season and have been extremely difficult to run against.
This QB battle could ultimately come down to which passer handles pressure better rather than which one piles up the prettier box score.
Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies bottom line: Pitt brings the more explosive passing numbers into Blacksburg, but Virginia Tech’s pass rush, running game and home environment give the Panthers a much different test than anything they’ve faced during their perfect September.

That also gives the Hokies a better chance to control tempo. If their defensive front keeps Pitt behind schedule, Virginia Tech can lean on its running game instead of asking Ethan Grunkemeyer to trade throws all night.
Virginia Tech has the right formula here: pressure Pitt, run the football and make the Panthers earn every drive.
Jeffrey Overton Jr. gives the Hokies a physical option on the ground, and that matters in a game where possessions could become more valuable as the night goes along. Virginia Tech doesn’t need to turn this into a track meet to create separation.
I trust the Hokies’ balance and home-field edge to eventually wear on Pitt. Give me Virginia Tech -3.5.
