These aren’t your James Conner run-heavy Panthers anymore, as Pittsburgh comes into Saturday’s meeting at Georgia Tech with one of the most prolific offenses in the country. Pitt has put up 40+ in all four of their games this season, a far cry even from last year’s 29.0 ppg.
Georgia Tech is ready for the challenge, especially at home and after losing by one score to #6 Clemson in week 3 followed by a 45-22 destruction against #21 North Carolina last Saturday. Playing great offenses is nothing new to this Yellow Jackets squad.
Pittsburgh Panthers
Just try and keep Pitt QB Kenny Pickett out of the Heisman conversation if he keeps these numbers up. The 5th year Senior’s experience is showing, as he’s 2nd the country in passing efficiency (195.63) to Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall, is tied for 2nd in TD passes (15) while also throwing just 1 INT so far.
Pickett had 13 TD to 9 INT over 9 games last year, so the Panthers offense has obviously revamped in 2021. Pickett and WR Jordan Addison seem to be sharing the same brain lately, with Addison having 303 receiving yards the last two weeks with six total TDs.
Some could argue that the Panthers competition has been the major factor in their offensive numbers instead of offseason improvements. Pittsburgh is 64th in strength of schedule this season, favored in every game so far and by at least 2 TDs in three of those.
It’s the 3-1 Panthers’ lone loss that makes them a sketchy wager as -3.5 favorites on Saturday. The Panthers lost 44-41 at home to Western Michigan in week 3 as -14 point favorites. If you can’t win even with a 382 yard, 6 TD performance from Kenny Pickett in that game what dos it really matter what he does against Georgia Tech?
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Sure the Pitt offense has been putting up some electric numbers lately but it’s not like Georgia Tech isn’t used to that kind of competition. In the last two weeks the Yellow Jackets have held the vaunted Clemson offense to just 284 total yards and North Carolina, the #7 scoring offense in the country last season, to just 22 points.
Pickett can spin the ball for Pittsburgh there’s no doubt about that, but it’s not as easy to put up those numbers when you’re getting sacked 8 times just ask UNC’s Sam Howell. Howell did put up 306 yards through the air, but had just 7 yards/attempt after averaging nearly twice that the two weeks prior.
Georgia Tech’s defense kind of looks relentless right now, as they also recovered three fumbles against the Tar Heels. Obviously the offense is going to hold up their end of the bargain too though, and they have Jeff Sims back after suffering an injury to his left shoulder in the opener.
Sims led GT to a 45-22 win over North Carolina by running for 3 scores and throwing for another. Jordan Yates gets some snaps under center for the Yellow Jackets too, which is just one more thing for Pitt to have to game plan against.

Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
It would be easy to like Pittsburgh in this contest with the numbers that offense has been putting up. That being said, the Georgia Tech defense has held its own against Clemson and North Carolina the last two weeks.
A lot of the Panthers’ offensive numbers have been put up against inferior opponents as well.
