The Pittsburgh Panthers enter this weekend’s tilt with Wake Forest bowl eligible and favored by a touchdown on the road. Pittsburgh was won 4 of their last 5 games with a high-flying offense that has surprised many teams in 2018.
The Pitt passing game has work left to do to even out the stellar ground game that the Panthers present this season. Pittsburgh ranks 10th in the nation on rushing yards per game (256.9), but are near the bottom of the country in passing stats. Finding the right balance will be key on finding a road win against a Wake Forest squad that has been disappointing in 2018.

The hype towards Wake Forest to have a big 2018 went array after the loss to Florida State knocked them to a 3 – 4 record. After a disparaging loss to Syracuse on November 3, Wake were +20 point underdogs last weekend against N.C State. A massive comeback win has hopefully sparked a light that could make the Deacons bowl eligible with a win on Senior Night at BB&T Field on Saturday.
Pittsburgh and Wake Forest have football roots that each date back to the 1890’s. This is the first time they will ever be meeting on a football field, so the newly-born rivalry begins tonight!
Pittsburgh Panthers
Pittsburgh has won three straight games, and are coming off a stellar outing against Virginia Tech last weekend. The 52 – 22 home win over the Hokies not only has the Panthers bowl eligible, but look who is sitting on top of the ACC Coastal Division standings?! Is that the Pitt Panthers we see holding the cards en route to an ACC title game appearance in 2018?
The Panthers have also taken wins over Virginia and Georgia Tech, who sit directly behind them in the division standings. Pittsburgh will face two 5 – 5 teams to close out 2018, as they’ll head to Miami to close out the regular season next weekend after leaving BB&T Field.

The Panthers have struggled away from home, however, going 1 – 3 while having to finish out the year on the road.
Panthers Head Coach Pat Narduzzi is still letting sophomore QB Kenny Pickett grow in the offense. Pickett’s two-way ability certainly adds a dimension to the team, but we all know the ground and pound attack will be coming regardless of who is calling the signals.
Running backs Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall will both be 1,000-yard rushers for the Panthers in 2018. Ollision has already broken the century mark with 1054 yards on the ground, while Hall is only 156 yards away from reaching the mark himself. The two have combined to carry the ball 245 times, and have totaled 1898 yards with 18 scores.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest were losers of five of their last 7 games headed to last weekend’s contest against N.C State. The Deacons were big dogs and got down off to a terrible start, finding themselves down 13 – 3 at halftime. On a National TV Thursday night stage, The Deacons looked as if they had given up on trying to get that 6th win that carries bowl eligibility, potentially going down to 4 – 6 should they have lost the game to the Wolfpack.
Apparently the halftime speech was a good one for Head Coach Dave Clawson, because Wake came out of the locker room a completely different team. Sophomore QB Jamie Newman ended the night 22 for 33 with 297 passing yards and 3 TD passes. Obviously all 3 of those scores came in the second half, with the last coming with :30 seconds to play, ensuring the 27 – 23 win.

Jack Freudenthal caught a beautiful ball from Newman for a 32-yard game-winning TD catch, it being his only reception of the game. Freshmen WR Sage Surratt brought in 8 balls for 109 yards, although Newman really only utilized 3 different receivers in the comeback win.
Many people expected this to be a game in which Wake Forest would be favored at home and on their way to decent bowl game. That has not worked out so far, and it could get uglier with a loss to Pitt at home.
