Nittany Lions vs. Wildcats Gameday
The Penn State Nittany Lions travel to Evanston on Friday night to face the Northwestern Wildcats in a Big Ten matchup with a little extra history attached. Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM ET on FOX.
This will be the first game inside the rebuilt Ryan Field, giving Northwestern a pretty nice way to open the doors. Penn State enters 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten, while Northwestern is 2-1 and also 0-1 in conference play.
Opening a brand-new Ryan Field against Penn State should make Friday night in Evanston plenty loud.
The Nittany Lions are coming off their first loss under Matt Campbell, a 24-20 home setback against Wisconsin. Penn State had rolled through its three nonconference games before the Badgers held the offense to 248 total yards.
Northwestern also tasted defeat for the first time last week, but there wasn’t much shame in a 29-23 road loss to No. 5 Indiana. The Wildcats trailed 12-0 at halftime before making the defending national champions work all the way to the finish.
Northwestern won last year’s meeting 22-21, snapping Penn State’s three-game winning streak in the series. The Nittany Lions still own a 16-6 advantage all-time and are 7-3 against the Wildcats on the road.

Wildcats Stats
Northwestern has scored 98 points through three games, and Aidan Chiles has given the offense a legitimate playmaking threat at QB. The Wildcats are averaging better than 400 total yards per game.
Chiles has completed 53 of 75 passes for 807 yards, 6 TD’s and no interceptions. He’s also dangerous with his legs, giving Northwestern another way to stress a defense when a play breaks down.
His best all-around performance came against Colorado, when he threw three TD’s and ran for two more in a 41-7 victory. He followed that by throwing for 293 yards at Indiana while accounting for three more scores.
Griffin Wilde remains one of the most dangerous pieces in the passing game. He caught two TD’s against Indiana, while tight end Luke Dehnicke broke out for seven catches and 140 yards.
The Wildcats also showed some backbone in Bloomington. Falling behind the defending national champions 12-0 could have turned ugly in a hurry, but Northwestern made it a one-score game in the fourth quarter.
Nittany Lions Stats
Penn State’s first three games produced 127 points before Wisconsin slammed on the brakes. The Nittany Lions scored only 20 in the Big Ten opener and finished with 248 total yards.
Rocco Becht has thrown for 865 yards with 9 TD’s and one interception through four games. His worst outing came against Wisconsin, when Penn State’s passing game struggled to generate explosive plays.
The absence of Koby Howard matters.
Howard had already piled up 344 receiving yards before suffering an injury against Buffalo, including a 70-yard TD in that game. With Howard sidelined, Chase Sowell led Penn State with 70 receiving yards against Wisconsin.
James Peoples rushed for 67 yards on 14 carries against the Badgers, but Penn State never found enough offensive rhythm to take control. The Nittany Lions now have to prove that performance was a bad Saturday rather than the start of a bigger problem.
Defensively, Penn State has allowed 46 points through four games. The Nittany Lions have also protected the football well, turning it over only once this season.

Becht remains firmly in control of the Penn State offense with 865 passing yards, 9 TD’s and one interception. His season started fast, including four TD passes against Marshall, before Wisconsin made life considerably tougher.
Chiles has been excellent through his first three games at Northwestern. He’s thrown for 807 yards and 6 TD’s without an interception while adding another dimension as a runner.
More importantly, Chiles has already shown he can produce against quality competition. He threw for 293 yards at No. 5 Indiana and helped Northwestern erase most of a 12-point halftime deficit.

Becht enters Friday needing a response after Penn State’s passing game stalled against Wisconsin. He won’t have Howard available to stretch the field, so the Nittany Lions need their other receivers and running game to make life easier on their QB.
Chiles gets the more emotional setting with Northwestern opening its new stadium, and his ability to extend plays could become a problem if Penn State doesn’t keep him contained.
This isn’t the mismatch the names on the jerseys might suggest. Northwestern has a QB playing confident football, while Penn State arrives in Evanston with something to prove after getting punched in the mouth at home.

Northwestern showed me plenty by hanging around with Indiana, so I’m not treating this like some automatic bounce-back spot for Penn State. The Wildcats can move the football, and Aidan Chiles gives them enough explosiveness to punish sloppy defense.
The difference for me is what happens when Penn State can dictate the game physically. The Nittany Lions have more ways to lean on Northwestern over four quarters, and they shouldn’t need Rocco Becht throwing it all over Evanston to create separation.
I’m betting Penn State responds to its first loss by getting back to a much more physical brand of football.
The new Ryan Field should be rocking for its grand opening, but that emotion cuts both ways. Penn State has already played away from Happy Valley, while Northwestern now gets the pressure of opening a new building against a conference opponent that badly needs a response.
Three points is a number I’m willing to lay. Give me Penn State -3.
