Here’s why I’m backing the bet below in my Beavers Rams free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Beavers vs. Rams Gameday
Oregon State heads to Fort Collins for a Week 5 matchup with Colorado State at Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium. Both teams enter at 2-2 as conference play begins in the rebuilt Pac-12.
Kickoff is set for 4 PM MT and 6 PM ET on USA Network.
The Beavers arrive with consecutive victories after an 0-2 start. Colorado State is trying to stop a two-game skid after splitting its four non-conference games.
Two 2-2 teams opening a new conference together. Nothing says fresh start quite like bringing September’s baggage along.
Colorado State also gets the occasion at home, with Saturday serving as the Rams’ Homecoming game.

Oregon State beat UTEP 33-7 last week after building a 20-point halftime advantage. It was the Beavers’ second consecutive victory.

Rams Stats
Colorado State’s offense refused to disappear at UTSA.
The Rams generated 500 total yards and converted five fourth downs. Even after the game got away from them early, they kept producing sustained drives rather than spending the second half waving a white flag.
K’saan Farrar handled his first start with poise.
The redshirt freshman threw for 344 yards and 2 TD’s. Terrence Smith Jr. was his biggest downfield weapon, finishing with 102 receiving yards.
Mel Brown supplied another source of explosiveness.
He rushed for 90 yards and opened the afternoon with a 94-yard kickoff return for a TD. Colorado State finished with 156 yards on the ground.
Stopping anybody was the larger problem.
UTSA generated 542 total yards and scored in every quarter. Jim Mora didn’t exactly need advanced analytics afterward to determine which side of the football required the longer meeting.
Beavers Stats
Oregon State dominated the line of scrimmage against UTEP.
The Beavers produced 451 total yards and held the Miners to 222. They also converted all six of their red-zone opportunities while keeping their QB clean for the second consecutive game.
The defensive front did considerably more than keep things tidy.
Oregon State piled up seven sacks, its highest total since 2019, and intercepted two passes. UTEP managed only 31 yards before halftime.
AJ Newberry provided the offensive balance.
He rushed for 111 yards and a TD on 11 carries as the Beavers posted a season-high 150 yards on the ground.
Oregon State finally gave its passing game some company, which seems polite after asking Atkinson to do so much heavy lifting.
Jesse Legree remains the player Colorado State can’t lose track of.
The freshman has 585 receiving yards and 6 TD’s through four games. His ability to create chunk plays gives Oregon State a quick-strike option even when a drive isn’t developing cleanly.
Beavers vs. Rams QB Matchup
Braden Atkinson has carried a substantial workload for Oregon State.
The Beavers QB has completed 106 of 163 passes for 1,421 yards with 11 TD’s and 2 interceptions. He’s averaging better than 355 passing yards per game.
Colorado State enters the week with uncertainty behind center.
Hauss Hejny opened the season as the starter and produced 10 TD passes with only one interception through three appearances, but a hamstring injury kept him out against UTSA.

Farrar gives the Rams a viable alternative if Hejny isn’t ready.
His first start showed he can operate the offense without shrinking the playbook, which gives Mora some flexibility while the QB decision plays out.
Atkinson presents the more established passing threat.
Colorado State’s job is to make him work underneath rather than allowing Legree and the Beavers to turn a couple of throws into instant field position. If the Rams can limit those explosives, they’ll have a much better chance of keeping Oregon State within reach.
Oregon State Beavers vs. Colorado State Rams bottom line: Oregon State owns the more established passing attack, but Colorado State has enough offensive answers to keep this from becoming a comfortable road assignment.
Oregon State Beavers vs. Colorado State Rams Football Betting Trends
- The Beavers have covered the spread in their last 4 games when the total is 50 or more.
- Additionally, Oregon State is 22-8 straight up as the favorite in their last 30 games.
- The Beavers have gone 17-8 against the spread after a win in their last 25 games.
- The Rams have hit the over in all 6 of their last games.
- Plus, Colorado State has hit the over in their last 4 games as an underdog.
- The Rams have also hit the over in their last 4 home games.
Beavers Rams Free Pick: Rams +6.5
Here is my Beavers Rams free pick: I’m taking Colorado State +6.5. Oregon State has earned some respect with consecutive wins, but I’m not ready to lay nearly a TD with the Beavers on the road against a CSU team that has enough offense to make this uncomfortable.
The Rams also have some insurance at QB. Hejny’s availability matters, but CSU has already shown the offense doesn’t have to be packed into storage if Farrar gets another start. For a home dog catching 6.5, that’s an important distinction.
Oregon State has won twice in a row and apparently we’re already charging road tax. I’ll take the points.
The number gives me room for a game where Oregon State is better without being seven points better. CSU can create explosives, and a big Homecoming crowd should make the Beavers work for whatever separation they get.
I don’t need Colorado State to fix every defensive problem in one week. I need the Rams to answer enough times to keep this inside one score, and this offense gives them a legitimate path to do it. Give me Colorado State +6.5.
