One of the first marquee matchups of bowl season will include a pair of top 16 teams in the Alamo Bowl. The Oregon Ducks will look to bounce back from an embarrassing loss in the PAC-12 title game while Oklahoma has had some time off after missing out on the BIG-12 Championship.
Both of these teams had playoff aspirations throughout the season but their momentum tailed off towards the end. Oregon was blown out by Utah in 2 of their final 3 games while Oklahoma also lost 2 of their final 3 games and was knocked off by their rival Oklahoma State in Bedlam which cost the Sooners a conference title spot.
These teams will also be dealing with the effects of an insane coaching carousel over the last month. Lincoln Riley shook the college landscape and blindsided Sooners fans by taking the USC job. Mario Cristobal also announced he was leaving Oregon last week to take the job at Miami.
Will these teams be able to silence all the outside noise?
Oregon Ducks
Oregon had a CFP playoff berth in the home stretch of the season but their aspirations fell out of the sky by the Utah Utes. The Ducks were handled 38-7 on the road on November 20th, ending their playoff hopes. Utah jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never let up.
They were given a chance for revenge just two weeks later in the PAC-12 Championship but once again they did not look prepared. Oregon was once again rolled in the first half and trailed 23-0 at the break before ultimately losing 38-10. The effort across the board looked questionable it what was an overall poor performance.
The writing may have been on the wall for the team as rumors swirled around Head Coach Mario Cristobal’s name in the connection to the open Miami job. Suspicions eventually came to fruition and Cristobal announced his plans to depart from Oregon. He finished his career as head coach with a 35-12 record in 4 seasons.
Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma was undefeated late into the season and had a shot at the CFP playoffs as many other top teams continued to lose. All hope was lost after the Sooners lost on the road to Baylor and then again two leeks later in Bedlam to rival Oklahoma State.
The losses knocked Oklahoma out of the BIG12 title game and a possible NY6 berth all the way down to the Alamo Bowl. Things only got worse from there as Head Coach Lincoln Riley blindsided the school and announced he was taking the open job at USC.
With the news of his departure it’s been crisis mode in Norman as players and top recruits announced their decommitment to the team or their intention to enter the transfer portal. Oklahoma quickly moved into the coaching search and grabbed longtime Clemson DC Brent Venables.
The contract for new Oklahoma Sooners football coach Brent Venables is worth $43.5 million over six years, sources told ESPN on Friday, making it one of the richest contracts for a first-year head coach in college football history. Venables worked at Oklahoma from 1999 to 2011 as co-defensive coordinator and then defensive coordinator.

4* Free Alamo Bowl NCAA Betting Pick:
This is arguably the hardest game to get a read on in Bowl Season and that is because both of these teams will be playing under interim coach’s. Both teams watched as their man in charge was poached by other universities for a big pay day.
There is also some top talent missing from this matchup as Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux announced he would prepare for the draft where he is a consensus top 5 pick. Oklahoma also had some of their top players announce their name in the transfer portal including leading receiver Jadon Haselwood.
For those reasons and many others I’d prefer to take the under in this game. Oregon has looked pedestrian on offense lately and Anthony Brown Jr. has really struggled to move the ball for the Ducks. Oklahoma will be without offensive guru Lincoln Riley and I’m not sure the new play caller will be able to dial up enough to trick the Oregon defense.
