The Oregon Ducks will head down to Berkeley and take on the California Golden Bears from FTX Field this Saturday on FS1. Oregon will come into this one as the 17-point road favorites here, with the total opening at 58.5.
HISTORY: Cal and Oregon have engaged in one of the most back-in-forth series of all-time, with the Golden Bears clinging onto 42-41 series lead.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon hasn’t let a Week 1 one beatdown from Georgia alter the direction of their season. The Ducks have ripped off six straight wins, defeating Cougars BYU and Washington State, before taking care of Stanford on the first of October, and crushing Arizona in Tucson prior to their. Last time out, the Ducks brought Halloween to Chip Kelly early.
In Week 8, Oregon defeated UCLA, 45-30, handing their former ball coach his first loss of the season, and improving to 5-2 against the spread this season.
Oregon scored 42.4 point per game, while allowing 29.1 ppg.
It also feels like Bo Nix has been around forever, and that exact experience came through last weekend. With all of the buzz surrounding Chip Kelly returning with an undefeated team, Nix went out and tossed five touchdowns en route to leading a blowout of UCLA, nixing any happy reunion along the way.
Nix has thrown for 1,809 passing yards, with 17 touchdowns to two interceptions, while adding 382 yards on the ground and eight scores through seven games.
Bucky Irving has come in and eased the loss of Travis Dye to USC. The Minnesota transfer has been steady, and he’s coming off a season-high 107 yards in the win over the Bruins. Irving leads UO with 536 rushing yards, while Noah Whittington has complimented him with 409 yards on 64 carries.
Troy Franklin has been Nix’s go-to guy this season. Franklin went for a season-high in the win over Wazzu, and he nearly matched that effort last weekend, with a 132-yard, two-touchdown performance versus UCLA. Franklin now leads the Ducks in receptions (35), receiving yards (561), and touchdown catches (5). UCLA transfer Chase Cota has come over and done his best Jeff Maehl impression, and he’s second on the team with 23 catches for 313 yards.
Cal Golden Bears
Cal got off to 2-0 start, and they nearly upset Notre Dame in South Bend in Week 3. The Golden Bears bounced back and defeated Arizona in their Pac-12 opener, but conference play hasn’t been kind to them since. After losing to Washington State, Cal came out of their bye, and handed Colorado their first win of season. They found hard last week after returning to Berkeley, but came up seven points short again.
In Week 7, Cal lost to Washington, 28-21, but covered to improve to 3-4 ATS.
California is scoring 23.3 points per game, while allowing 22.5 ppg.
Jack Plummer has come in and brought steady QB play to Cal. Plummer started 17 games at Purdue, and despite the final result, he’s coming off of arguably his best start of the season. Plummer threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns, and his experience kept the Bears in it with Washington all the way to the end. The veteran QB will have a stiff test here, and possibly the best defense he’s faced this season.
Jaydn Ott has has received the majority of the work here in his first season, and after a 284-yard outburst versus Arizona, he’s looks like the future at the position. Ott has received 16 touches or more in each game this season, and he’s totaled 618 rushing yards, 21 catches, and five touchdowns through his first seven games.
Plummer’s two favorite targets are Jeremiah Hunter and J.Michael Sturdivant. Hunter has caught 30 passes for 448 yards, but his status will be worth monitoring prior to this one. Sturvidant leads the team with 37 receptions, and he’s recorded 445 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Oregon faces a somewhat steep test in Berkeley this weekend, but only from margin standpoint. The Ducks have been the better team by miles, and should have minimal trouble crossing the finish line here. These road conference matchups can get tricky though, and if we look away from the spread, there’s a nice, notable trend emerging.
All but one of Oregon’s games have nuked this number, with that one bout being the season opening blowout from Georgia. The Ducks are flying right now offensively, and they likely won’t slow down here against a beatable Cal defense. As long as the Golden Bears can compete, and more important contribute to the scoreboard, this number should be hit again. Oregon is trustworthy of doing the heavy lifting on the road here.
