Cowboys vs. Mountaineers Gameday
Oklahoma State travels to Morgantown Saturday night to face unbeaten West Virginia in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET at Milan Puskar Stadium on FS1.
The Cowboys enter 2-1 under first-year coach Eric Morris. OSU lost 24-10 at Tulsa before returning home to stun No. 6 Oregon 39-31 and hammer Murray State 59-0.
Now they head back on the road.
Beating No. 6 Oregon changed the mood in Stillwater; winning under the lights in Morgantown would change it again.
West Virginia is 3-0 after beating Coastal Carolina 31-24, UT Martin 52-7 and No. 25 Virginia 38-27. The Virginia victory came at a neutral site in Charlotte, where the Mountaineers erased early deficits behind Michael Hawkins Jr.
Saturday is a Gold Rush at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Oklahoma State leads the all-time series 10-6 and has won eight of the last 10 meetings. The Cowboys have been particularly comfortable in Morgantown, winning five straight trips there.

West Virginia is now a slight home favorite after Oklahoma State opened on the other side of the market. The Mountaineers are laying around 1.5 points with a moneyline near -125, while OSU is approximately +105.
The total remains 59.5.
Oklahoma State’s offense has taken off since the Tulsa loss. The Cowboys produced 554 yards against Oregon and followed with 662 against Murray State, scoring 98 points across those two wins.
West Virginia has been productive in a different way.
The Mountaineers are averaging 281.3 rushing yards per game, sixth-best in the FBS. They ran for 283 against Virginia, with Hawkins and Cam Cook each topping 120 yards.

Mountaineers Stats
West Virginia is averaging 458.3 yards per game, with Rich Rodriguez’s offense leaning heavily on the run. The Mountaineers have rushed for 844 yards through three games and are averaging better than 280 per Saturday.
Michael Hawkins Jr. is a large part of that equation.
The Oklahoma transfer has rushed for 322 yards and six touchdowns while throwing for 477 yards and five scores without an interception. Against Virginia, Hawkins ran for 123 yards and accounted for all five West Virginia touchdowns.
Cam Cook gives WVU another serious option on the ground.
Cook also rushed for 123 yards against Virginia and has 317 for the season. DJ Epps leads the receiving corps with 240 yards and three touchdowns, giving Hawkins a downfield option when defenses start creeping toward the line.
Hawkins and Cook both went for 123 rushing yards against Virginia, because apparently sharing meant doing the exact same damage.
West Virginia’s defense is allowing 365.7 yards per game. The pass defense remains the softer spot, surrendering 246.7 per game, which matters against a Cowboys offense throwing for better than 300.
Cowboys Stats
Oklahoma State has become one of the country’s most productive offenses, averaging 528 yards per game. The Cowboys are throwing for 306.3 and rushing for 221.7, giving Mestemaker considerably more balance than the season-opening loss suggested.
The defense deserves some attention, too.
OSU is allowing only 267.3 yards per game, including 167.3 through the air. The Cowboys held Oregon to 281 total yards before limiting Murray State to 160 in last week’s shutout.
Drew Mestemaker has thrown for 882 yards and eight touchdowns through three games.
Caleb Hawkins leads the ground game with 261 yards. Justin Bowick has 281 receiving yards and three touchdowns, including a career-high 178 yards and two scores against Murray State.
That Murray State game got silly quickly.
Mestemaker completed 20 of 22 passes for 324 yards and five touchdowns, setting Oklahoma State single-game records for completion percentage and passing efficiency with at least 20 attempts. OSU scored on nine of its first 10 possessions.
Cowboys vs. Mountaineers QB Matchup
Michael Hawkins Jr. gives West Virginia a true dual-threat quarterback in Rich Rodriguez’s offense. He’s thrown for 477 yards and five touchdowns without an interception while adding 322 yards and six more scores on the ground.
Virginia got the full experience last week.
Hawkins rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for two more scores in the 38-27 upset. His ability to turn a broken play into a first down makes OSU’s job considerably different from anything it saw against Murray State.
Drew Mestemaker attacks defenses more conventionally, but he’s hardly stationary.
The Cowboys quarterback has passed for 882 yards and eight touchdowns, and his 18-game streak with at least 200 passing yards is the longest active run in the FBS. Against Oregon, he threw for 317 yards and rushed for 109 as OSU knocked off the sixth-ranked Ducks.

Mestemaker followed that with five touchdown passes against Murray State.
The matchup is pretty clean: West Virginia wants Hawkins involved in a punishing ground game, while Oklahoma State would love to make the Mountaineers defend Mestemaker and his receivers across the entire field.
Both quarterbacks can punish mistakes.
Neither defense can afford many of them.
Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. West Virginia Mountaineers bottom line: Mestemaker gives OSU a clear avenue against West Virginia’s vulnerable pass defense, but Hawkins and the Mountaineers’ sixth-ranked rushing attack can control possessions and make the Cowboys defend every inch of the field.

Here is my Cowboys Mountaineers free pick: I’m taking Under 59.5. These offenses can move the football, but both defenses have been considerably better than the original total suggests.
Oklahoma State is allowing only 267.3 yards per game, and the Cowboys just posted their first shutout since 2021. West Virginia’s best work comes on the ground, which should help keep the clock moving.
There are plenty of offensive toys here, but 59.5 still asks both teams to do quite a bit.
The biggest concern is Drew Mestemaker against a WVU secondary that can be attacked. Still, Morgantown at night in a Big 12 opener is a different setting than hanging 59 on Murray State.
Michael Hawkins Jr. and Cam Cook should keep West Virginia committed to the run. I’ll take my chances that enough long drives end without touchdowns.
