Oklahoma is now back in line to get to the conference title game. They just need to keep winning.
West Virginia has been solid for most of the season, but struggled against good teams.
This would be a season maker for the Mountaineers if they can muster the effort.
Oklahoma Sooners
The Sooners are not going to make the playoffs this season. The season is not going to be a disaster either.
After losing back-to-back losses and escaping the Red River Rivalry with a win over Texas a couple of things happened. The Sooners started playing some defense and running the ball.
Spencer Rattler has enjoyed a very productive first season directing the Sooners attack. There is every reason to think he will be better in the future, though maybe not as good as his Heisman predecessors.
Oklahoma is always able to put enough points in the board to win. Their challenge is on defense. This one can be a final tune-up for a second date with Iowa State.
OU knows it just needs to win and advance. I think that might show in their play with a conservative gameplan.
West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia has been up and down this season and is coming off its worst loss of the year. They just got spanked by Iowa State, 42-6. Scoring has been a problem.
They have been able to move the ball, 43rd in yards per game, but they are just 77th in scoring. To beat Oklahoma you have to be able to punch the ball in the end zone.
Preventing scoring has been a strength, though you have to wonder if last week’s beating was a signal that the team is just too fatigued at this point for a maximum effort. The only real change is that they are at home.
West Virginia is going to need its best game of the season to compete here. It is just a little too much to expect with so little on the line.
