Bedlam sees one of it’s last few remaining matchups before Oklahoma joins the SEC.
Oklahoma has been a team of runs this season. A three game winning streak to open the season, followed by a three game losing streak, a bounceback two game stride, and a recent two game slide encapsulates their schedule to-date. The Sooners have been hard to figure out even for Vegas; they’re 3-7 ATS, failing to cover by an average of 8.3 points.
The Cowboys started the season hot before dropping their game to TCU. Since that point they’re 2-2, bringing their season record to 7-3. Sharps called for regression and regression came. The Cowboys can very plausibly make the Big 12 Title game still. They need Kansas State to falter, finish their schedule with wins and then take their second shot at the Horned Frogs.
Oklahoma Sooners
Dillon Gabriel struggled last week against West Virginia to the tune of 20.7 QBR. Instead, it was the Eric Gray show. The senior back posted 211 rushing yards and two scores on 8.4 (!) ypc.
That reflects their season as a whole though — Oklahoma runs about 55% of the time, which puts them in the upper quartile of the country.
Their ability to move the ball keeps them out of passing downs (111th), which is generally a sign that their success is sustainable. The Sooners don’t really sport much explosiveness though (84th), so negative game scripts can be a bet killer.
The Sooner defense has allowed 37.3 ppg in conference play, and with their lack of explosiveness, their 2-5 record within the Big 12 starts to come into focus. They struggle up front versus the run, ranking poorly in stuff rate, line yards and success rate. They also don’t force teams into passing downs often (89th) which makes it hard to get off the field.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oklahoma State is coming off a win over Iowa State, but their offense has been anemic all season. Prior to that, they allowed 48 and 37 points in two losses.
Spencer Sanders has missed some time in each of the last three weeks so the drop off is somewhat explained, but he’s expected back this week. The Cowboys shade the pass and haven’t been able to pick up key yardages when running the ball (115th). Though Oklahoma State finds themselves in passing downs often, they do show explosiveness (18th) in those situations.
The Cowboy defense has allowed 33.1 ppg in conference play, struggling just like the Sooners. We know Oklahoma likes to run the ball so can the Boys stop it? They’re just 92nd in defensive rushing success rate and struggle to contain explosiveness. Oklahoma State does well forcing teams into passing downs though (19th) which could provide trouble for the Sooners.
