The Oklahoma Sooners will travel north and take a familiar trip to Lincoln to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers from Memorial Stadium this Saturday afternoon on FOX. Oklahoma opened as eight-point favorites, with the total opening at 64.5.
HISTORY: The series between these two schools dates at the way back to 1912. Nebraska and Oklahoma met in every season from 1921-2001, colliding in many high stakes battles over their years as Big 12 rivals. The Cornhuskers dominated the series in the 90s, but the Sooners have won six of the last seven meetings. Last year’s meeting ended up being a classic in Norman, with Oklahoma picking up the victory at home, 23-16.
Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma has a chance to run the table after taking care of business through the first two weeks of the season. The Brent Venables era started on a positive note, dispatching UTEP by 32 points in the home opener, and they’ll now face a former fallen rival.
Oklahoma defeated Kent State in Norman last weekend, 33-3, but a slow start led them missing the 33-point margin by a small three points.
Dillon Gabriel looks comfortable at OU already. The UCF transfer may experience his growing pains when Big 12 play begins, but he’s been productive early and he’s protected the football. With such a favorable schedule,
Gabriel has completed 70.6% of his passes through two games, tossng for 529 passing yards with five touchdowns to no interceptions.
Eric Gray has got the bulk of the work early for the Sooners, and he’s made the most of his opportunities. Gray leads OU with 173 rushing yards on 26 carries thus far. Senior back Marcus Major has finally found a role within the offense, and he’s found the endzone three times already.
Marvin Mims looks like the next NFL wideout out of OU. The junior receiver had a career day in the win over Kent State, catching seven passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He’s certainly going to give this dysfunctional Nebraska secondary some trouble.
The Sooners have been impressively stout against the run thus far, but Anthony Grant is going to put them to the test this weekend.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
After enduring one of the most painful seasons in school history, marred with close losses and confusion, the Cornhuskers jumped out to an 1-2 start, and decided they’d seen enough. Even without his buyout price set to drop October 1st, Nebraska said goodbye to Scott Frost, ending a very underwhelming reign at his alma mater.
Nebraska embarrasingly lost at home to Georgia Southern (+23.5) last weekend, 45-42.
In spite of all of the dysfunction, Casey Thompson may played his game ever. The former Texas quarterback threw for a career-high 318 passing yards and a touchdown, while scoring three times on the ground. There’s talent in place, but can the new regime utilize it?
Thompson has thrown for 2,113 yards on 63.2% passing, with four touchdowns to three interceptions, and added four rushing touchdowns in three games this season.
Anthony Grant is another talented player who can help right the ship for Nebraska. Grant has been phenomenal through the first three weeks, surpassing 100 yards in each outing, and truly displaying home run ability. Grant leads the Big 12 in rushing with 428 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
The transfer portal retooled Nebraska’s receiving core with three solid pass catchers, but the absence of Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda after his 120-yard performance against Northwestern has been felt in the last two weeks. Trey Palmer has come over from LSU and led the team in receptions each time out, totaling team leads of 18 receptions and 231 receiving yards. Marcus Washington’s rapport with Thompson from Texas was on display last week, catching six passes for a career-best 123 yards.
The Blackshirts have got to find their mojo defensive or the 2022 season will continue to fall apart.

Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
It’s hard to believe 25 years ago the Nebraska Cornhuskers were in the midst of a modern-day Patriots like run, winning three championships while recording a handful of 11-win seasons during the Tom Osborne era. Oklahoma’s in the midst of a dominant span themselves, and that should continue here in Lincoln.
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: Oklahoma -8.5
Nebraska has all of the motivation in the world with their former Big 12 rival Oklahoma coming to town. Last week’s debacle had been building up for two seasons now, and with Frost now out of the door, the Cornhuskers can now move forward. They’re going to fight this weekend, it just might not be enough. The hiring of Brent Venables was not a sexy hire, but the defensive approach from the Sooners early is encouraging, and they may have finally found that balance on both sides of the ball to be dominant weekly.
Oklahoma comes into Lincoln in much better shape here, take their spread for this former Big 12 rivalry.
