Buckeyes vs. Hawkeyes Gameday
No. 5 Ohio State heads to Iowa City for a Week 5 Big Ten matchup with No. 14 Iowa at Kinnick Stadium. Ryan Day’s Buckeyes enter at 3-1 and 1-0 in conference play, while Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes are 4-0 and 1-0.
Ohio State is making its second road trip after losing its first at Texas.
Iowa returns home after one of the wildest finishes of Week 4, winning at Michigan on the final play. The Hawkeyes are trying to start 5-0 for the first time since 2021.
Ohio State brings the prettier offense, while Iowa brings Kinnick and absolutely no obligation to entertain anybody.
ESPN College GameDay will also be in Iowa City for the first time since 2006. The Buckeyes haven’t visited Kinnick since 2017, giving Iowa another chance to make a highly ranked Ohio State team thoroughly sick of the place.

Hawkeyes Stats
Iowa needed almost the entire afternoon to get its offense moving at Michigan.
The Hawkeyes managed only 77 yards and five first downs before halftime. Michigan eventually finished with 429 total yards, but Iowa stayed close enough to give itself one final opportunity.
Hank Brown made it count.
Brown finished 21-of-35 for 227 yards and 2 TD’s. Both scores went to Reece Vander Zee in the fourth quarter, including the 16-yard winner on the final snap.
Iowa’s running game had a much tougher afternoon.
The Hawkeyes managed only 58 rushing yards on 24 carries, with Kamari Moulton leading the way with 44. That was a dramatic drop from what the ground game had produced earlier in the season.
The defense kept Iowa alive long enough for the offense to find an answer.
Deshaun Lee intercepted Bryce Underwood at the Iowa 2-yard line in the third quarter, preventing Michigan from extending its lead. Iowa has now forced a punt on the opponent’s opening possession in 10 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Buckeyes Stats
Ohio State’s passing game exploded against Illinois.
Julian Sayin threw for 367 yards and 4 TD’s as the Buckeyes piled up 518 total yards. Ohio State also converted eight of 12 third downs and finished every red-zone opportunity with a TD.
Jeremiah Smith was the main reason Illinois spent the afternoon looking for answers it never found.
Smith caught 12 passes for 217 yards and 4 TD’s. Ohio State didn’t allow a sack, giving Sayin plenty of time to let those matchups develop.
The Buckeyes weren’t nearly as dominant against the run.
Illinois rushed for 199 yards while averaging 6 yards per carry. That’s the obvious invitation for Iowa to test Ohio State on the ground and keep Sayin standing next to Ryan Day instead of throwing touchdowns.
Ohio State can’t score from the sideline, which may be Iowa’s most realistic defensive strategy of the afternoon.
The Buckeyes also avoided the kind of mistakes that can turn a road favorite’s afternoon sideways.
That’s important at Kinnick, where giving Iowa cheap points is usually followed by four hours of wondering how your Saturday became so irritating.
Buckeyes vs. Hawkeyes QB Matchup
Hank Brown has settled in as Iowa’s starting QB.
Brown has completed 66 of 97 passes for 700 yards with 5 TD’s and no interceptions through four games. His ball security has been especially important for an Iowa team comfortable winning without asking its QB to force the issue.
Julian Sayin has been the engine of Ohio State’s passing attack.
The Buckeyes QB has thrown for 1,206 yards with 10 TD’s and one interception. He enters Iowa City after his biggest passing performance of the young season.

Brown doesn’t need to match Sayin throw for throw.
His job is to keep Iowa out of obvious passing situations and avoid giving Ohio State short fields. If the Hawkeyes can stay patient, Brown has already shown he can make throws late without spending the first three quarters trying to be something he isn’t.
Sayin faces a different kind of assignment.
Ohio State has plenty of explosive ability, but Iowa’s defense is built to make QB’s earn drives one completion at a time. The longer the Hawkeyes can prevent Smith and the Buckeyes from producing instant points, the more this game starts looking like the kind of afternoon Ferentz has enjoyed for roughly half his adult life.
Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Iowa Hawkeyes bottom line: Ohio State owns the explosive passing advantage, but Iowa has the defense and preferred pace to make every possession more expensive.
Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Iowa Hawkeyes Football Betting Trends
- Ohio State has a strong record straight up as favorites, going 27-3 in their last 30 games from 2023 to 2026.
- Additionally, the Buckeyes have covered the spread in 12 of their last 16 games as favorites from 2025 to 2026.
- They are also 18-9 against the spread after a win in their last 27 games from 2023 to 2026.
- Iowa has been perfect against the spread as underdogs, with a 4-0 record in their last 4 games from 2025 to 2026.
- Also, the Hawkeyes have been strong straight up at home, winning 13 of their last 15 games from 2024 to 2026.
- Iowa is 6-0 straight up in their last 6 games from 2025 to 2026 after a win.
Buckeyes Hawkeyes Free Pick: Under 45.5
Here is my Buckeyes Hawkeyes free pick: I’m taking Under 45.5. Ohio State has enough weapons to make an Under bettor uncomfortable, but Iowa’s entire business model is making talented offenses spend three hours wondering why everything suddenly feels difficult.
The Hawkeyes need this played on their terms. Run the football, shorten possessions and make Sayin work through the defense instead of handing Ohio State extra possessions. Nobody has ever accused Iowa of being offended by a punt.
If Iowa gets to set the pace at Kinnick, 46 points starts looking like a pretty ambitious Saturday.
Ohio State can contribute without its offense doing anything wrong. The Buckeyes have the defensive advantage against Brown, so there’s no reason to invite volatility if they get ahead. Make Iowa drive the field and force the Hawkeyes to manufacture points the hard way.
My college football betting system likes this kind of game because Ohio State can control it without needing a scoring contest. Give me field position, long possessions and enough punts to make the casual viewer reconsider his weekend plans. I’m betting Buckeyes-Hawkeyes Under 45.5.
