The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will travel and take on the Syracuse Orange from the JMA Wireless Dome this Saturday on ABC. Syracuse will open as the three-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 47.5.
HISTORY: Former Big East rivals Notre Dame and Syracuse have an extensive history on the court, but they’ve only crossed paths ten times on the gridiron. These two programs have iconically faced off at Yankee Stadium previously, and Notre Dame leads the all-time series 7-3, after winning each of the last five meetings.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame got a much-needed, statement win prior to their bye. After playing Ohio State close in Week 1, an embarrassing loss to Marshall happened in their home opener. The Fighting Irish then avoided another disaster by defeating Cal to earn their first win, and earned a much-needed victory over UNC on the road in their ACC opener. Notre Dame then topped that effort last weekend with a marquee victory over BYU, but a home loss to longtime rival Stanford put a huge halt to their momentum.
In Week 8, Notre Dame defeated UNLV, 44-21, failing to cover the loft 26-point spread and dropping to 3-4 against the spread this season.
Notre Dame is scoring 26.6 points per game, with 21.7 ppg.
Drew Pyne separated himself from the pack with his outing against UNC, and he bounced back nicely from a tough showing versus Stanford last weekend with two touchdown tosses. This will mark the toughest environment he’s played in this season, so it remains to be seen how handles the Syracuse crowd.
Pyne is up to 1,077 passing yards with twelve touchdowns to three interceptions through three games.
Chris Tyree, Audric Estime, and Logan Diggs all effectively split the touches. Estime will return to his home state, looking to build on his team-leading 435 rushing yards and six scores. Diggs has burst onto the scene over the past four weeks, and he went off for a career-high 130 yards versus UNLV. Tyree is the veteran of the bunch, and he’s totaled 385 yards and 14 catches on the season.
Tight End U has another one with Michael Mayer. The junior tight end is on-pace to lead the Fighting Irish again after another strong 115-yard outing against UNLV. Mayer caught five passes in the opener against Ohio State, and he brought in eleven receptions for 118 yards and two scores in the win over BYU. He leads ND with 44 catches, 526 receiving yards, and six touchdowns.
Syracuse Orange
Syracuse opened their season with a 24-point win over Louisville, and they’ve been sharp since. The Orange traveled and blew out longtime Big East foe Connecticut, then picked up a quality non-conference win over Purdue at home in a shootout. Syracuse defeated Virginia on a last-minute field goal, before shutting out Wagner for their homecoming game. Dino Babers’ team came out of their bye and picked their biggest win of the season last Saturday.
In Week 8, Syracuse loss to Clemson at home, 27-21, fighting hard and covering the 13-point underdog spread.
Syracuse scores 33.9 points per game, while allowing 15.2 ppg.
Garrett Shrader still has Syracuse in a position to win the ACC. The junior quarterback has been very effective this season, hurting opponents with his arm and legs. Shrader totaled 291 yards (210 pass, 81 rush), tossed a pair of touchdowns in the win over N.C. State.
Shrader has thrown for 1,601 passing yards with 13 touchdowns to four interceptions through seven starts, while also rushing for 371 yards and six scores.
Sean Tucker had a monster freshman season for Syracuse last season, going for 1,496 rushing yards and 12 scores, and he’s on-pace to do so again. Tucker gained 184 yards from scrimmage (100 rush, 84 rec) against Louisville, and he exploded for a career-high 232 yards in win over Wagner.
Tucker brings versatility, and he’s rushed for 698 yards and six touchdowns, while catching 28 passes for 216 receiving yards through the first seven games.
Orondo Gadsden II’s rapport with Shrader has been impressive early. The sophomore wideout had big games in victories over Purdue and Virginia, but he topped himself last time out. Gadsen II posted career-highs of eight catches for 141 yards for a pair of touchdowns in the win over the Wolfpack. Gadsden II leads Syracuse in receptions (37), receiving yards (593), and touchdowns (5).
