Fighting Irish vs. Tar Heels Gameday
Week 5 sends the No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish to Chapel Hill for a Saturday matchup with the North Carolina Tar Heels. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET at Kenan Stadium, with ESPN carrying the game.
Notre Dame arrives at 4-0 and ranked third in both major polls. The Irish opened with a 41-13 win over Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, blanked Rice 52-0, beat Michigan State 27-10 and handled Purdue 49-10 on the road. That’s a pretty convincing first month.
Notre Dame has been steamrolling people, but Chapel Hill gives the Irish their first true ACC road test.
North Carolina is 2-1 after getting an extra week to digest a 28-20 loss at Clemson. The Tar Heels opened with a 15-10 win over TCU before beating East Tennessee State 35-3, and now Bill Belichick’s club gets its biggest test of the young season.
Notre Dame has dominated the recent series. The Irish have won four straight meetings dating to 2017, including a 45-32 victory at Kenan Stadium in 2022.

It’s Week 5, Fighting Irish vs. Tar Heels, with undefeated Notre Dame trying to keep rolling against a rested North Carolina team at home.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Odds & Last 5
The opening odds have Notre Dame as a massive -2266 moneyline favorite, with North Carolina returning +1108. The Fighting Irish are laying 21 points on the road, while the Tar Heels are getting +21 and the total sits at 47.5. Notre Dame hasn’t merely started 4-0. Three of its four wins have come by at least 17 points, and the Irish have scored 49 or more in three games.
The latest was a 49-10 road win at Purdue. That followed victories over Michigan State and Rice after Notre Dame opened the season by beating Wisconsin 41-13.
North Carolina’s first two games were much tighter. The Tar Heels edged TCU 15-10 and then handled East Tennessee State 35-3 before Clemson handed them their first loss, 28-20. The bye gave UNC extra preparation time for this one. They’ll probably need every minute of it against an Irish team that has been winning games on both sides of the ball.

Tar Heels Stats
North Carolina has scored 70 points through three games, but the offense hasn’t consistently created explosive plays. Billy Edwards Jr. has thrown for 611 yards, with the Tar Heels leaning on a more controlled approach through the first month. The defense has been the stronger unit, surrendering only 41 points.
North Carolina allowed 10 against TCU and three against East Tennessee State before Clemson scored 28.
The Tar Heels have also produced 10 sacks, giving them one avenue to make CJ Carr uncomfortable. Against this Notre Dame offense, pressure without constantly selling out with extra rushers would be a nice place to start. Benjamin Hall leads UNC with 215 rushing yards, while tight end Jelani Thurman has been its top receiving threat with 183 yards. North Carolina needs those skill players to help Edwards sustain possessions because giving Notre Dame’s offense repeated short fields is asking for trouble.
Fighting Irish Stats
Notre Dame has scored 169 points through four games and has already topped 40 three times. The passing attack has produced 1,100 yards, while Carr has quickly settled into command of the offense. The defense might be even more impressive.
The Irish have surrendered only 33 points all season, including a shutout against Rice. Wisconsin scored 13, Michigan State managed 10 and Purdue was held to 10, so North Carolina is staring at a defense that hasn’t given anybody much breathing room.
Notre Dame has also generated 13 sacks. That front can change the math for UNC if Edwards is repeatedly forced into third-and-long situations. Carr has thrown for 963 yards and nine TD’s, while Micah Gilbert leads the receiving corps with 334 yards.
Nolan James Jr. and Aneyas Williams have provided balance on the ground, which keeps defenses from simply sitting back and waiting for Carr to throw.
There are some personnel concerns. Wide receiver Quincy Porter will miss the remainder of the season following a setback with his knee, but Notre Dame has already built its 4-0 start without relying on him.
Fighting Irish vs. Tar Heels QB Matchup
Edwards is the guy North Carolina needs to get going. He’s thrown for 611 yards through three games, but UNC has produced only 70 total points and faces a substantial jump in defensive difficulty Saturday. That makes efficiency more important than volume. North Carolina doesn’t need Edwards attempting to win a throwing contest with Notre Dame; it needs him moving the chains, avoiding negative plays and keeping Carr on the sideline.
Carr has been operating from a much more comfortable position. He’s thrown for 963 yards and nine TD’s through four starts while Notre Dame has averaged better than 42 points per game.

More importantly, Carr hasn’t had to force the issue. Notre Dame’s defense and running game have repeatedly put the offense in favorable situations, allowing the QB to take what defenses give him instead of chasing points. That’s a difficult formula for North Carolina to crack.
If the Tar Heels can’t generate pressure with their front, Carr should have opportunities to attack downfield without exposing himself to unnecessary risk.
Edwards doesn’t need to match him throw for throw.
He does need to protect the football and prevent Notre Dame from turning a manageable game into an avalanche of short fields and quick scores.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. North Carolina Tar Heels bottom line: Notre Dame brings the deeper offense and nastier defensive profile to Chapel Hill, but a rested UNC defense gives the Tar Heels at least a fighting chance to drag this into a slower game than the three-touchdown spread might suggest.

Fighting Irish Tar Heels Free Pick: Under 47.5
Here is my Fighting Irish Tar Heels free pick: I’m backing Under 47.5.
Notre Dame has rolled to 4-0, but its defense has done plenty of the heavy lifting. The Irish have allowed only 33 points all season, and North Carolina hasn’t shown enough offensive consistency to make me eager to bet on a shootout here.
The Tar Heels have been much better defensively themselves, allowing 41 points through three games. They also get Notre Dame at Kenan Stadium, where slowing the game down makes considerably more sense than trading possessions with the No. 3 team in the country.
Notre Dame may control this game without needing the scoreboard to turn into a slot machine.
North Carolina’s best path is making Carr work for long drives while keeping its own offense out of obvious passing situations. If the Tar Heels can avoid giving Notre Dame short fields, getting beyond 47 points becomes a bigger ask.
I see more defensive resistance than the spread suggests, especially with UNC coming off a bye. Give me Under 47.5.
